Steering Feels Wierd?

On my 463 , suddenly the steering feels different, a little vague in the straight ahead position and more than a 1/3 of a turn of the steering wheel, seems to require more input ( steering feels almost unassisted), no problems when parking, but does feel like something has broken. PAS level ok, recently fitted a new v belt,. Could this have caused Power Steering Pump to fail / detriate? No nasty noises otherwise.

DO YOU ALSO NOTICE THAT AFTER EVERY STEERING WHEEL TURN, YOUR BRAKE PEDAL IS SPONGY AT THE FIRST BRAKE PEDAL -DEPRESSION, WHICH HARDENS AT THE SECOND PEDAL? THEN, YOU HAVE LOOSE FRONT WHEEL BEARING OR ONE THAT IS DISINTERGRATING.

CHECK FOR FRONT WHEEL BEARING PLAY. YOU MAY FIND, QUITE AN EXTREME WHEEL TRAVEL!

FAILING THAT, TEST FOR A DIFFERENCE OF FEEL ON STEERING WITH THE FRONT JACKED UP, WITH ENGINE RUNING AND SWITCHED OFF. NOTICE ANY DIFFERNCE? REPORT BACK.

REGARDS,

Thanks Rakesh, did check for play at wheels, non there. One track rod end has a very slight knock, but doubt this would cause strange feeling, lack of return. Steering felt ok with engine turned offand front jacked up, didn't try with engine running , stupidly! I suspect punp is on the way out!

Problem solved. A mechanic friend suggested that the UJ's on the steering column might be stiff, a liberal dousing of WD40 solved it! :D

Thanks for posting the resolution; could have been an expensive (time-consuming!) elimination otherwise...

Agreed.... first thing I did after reading his post was to look for the WD40 can!

Notice the top UJ can be rebuilt, the circlips look like you can repalce this, I presume not massive money. If I can work out how to remove the steering column , I will probably soak the joints in an oil bath. 8)
