Dear All,

I have 4 questions regarding my 2004 swb G500 which I am servicing at this moment.

A) Where can I buy a dip-stick to meassure the oil in my 5-speed 722.630.05.514028 automatic transmission gearbox. MB are not prepared to supply it.

B) I think I was told that the dealer-tool dipstick also meassures the temperature of the oil. Does this check?

C) I intend to use the new 7-Gtronic gearbox oil. Am I correct?

D) Can one change/replace also the oil from the hydraulic converter? Is there a tap?

A million thanks Wise Ones.

PS. I am also fitting an ORC bumper with a mosfet Warn winch (plasma rope) and some underbody plate protection for the tank and transfer box. Then I will be on my way... :D

Hi.

I think that you will have to threaten them. I mean WTF do these guys think they are? They have an obligation under EU legislation to sell you the dipstick. Tell them that you will denounce them before the Customer's service of MB Hellas....

Part Number is A 140 589 15 21 00 for the dipstick. You can only buy it from MB.

You can either use A 001 989 21 03 10 or A 001 989 45 03 10 as gearbox oil, whichever is cheaper. One of them is suitable for the 7-speeder (and the 5-speeder) and the other one just for the 5-speeder.

As for the torque converter in come models there is a screw to drain the oil. On others, there isn't.

Good luck

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

Thank you for the answer.
I will try to get the dipstick from Germany: it is MB Hellas who gives their dealers the leeway to act like pompous pricks.
If I get stuck, I will send a letter to MB Germany and see what happens.

In the meantime and without dip-stick, I have one more question: I opened the gearbox drain-tap and only 3.5 ltrs came out. This is the exact quantity I replaced. I read that the total quantity the auto-gearbox plus converter takes is 6.5 ltrs. Does this mean that the hydraulic converter takes 3 ltrs? This appears too much to me. Am I making some silly & dangerous mistake?

If you drain with the drain plug and not by taking the whole oil pan off then about a litre is left in the oil pan, plus a bit in the cooling lines and a the rest in the torque converter. Also make sure that you measure the fluid that came out at room temperature when you are replacing with new fluid to get the most accurate measure (sounds like you have done everything correctly and when you get the dipstick you can check exact level)

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

I had my oil changed by my local garage and did the same research as Draxey and others. I used A 001 989 21 03 10 oil as the MB dealer said that they don't use the other type in their workshop. It came in 1L bottles only at £10 ea. I also bought the dipstick and filter, then gave the lot to my garage to do the work. They put in 5L only after dropping the sump and draining the t/c. The G had 50k miles on it. I intend to replace it at 40-50k miles in future.

From the response to my question, I gather that everybody can get the famous and elusive dip-stick except the customers of MB Hellas. How is this for service?
Interestingly, MB is managed by Germans (who - contrary to the reputation enjoyed by the natives - are supposed to follow the rules).
I am furious...

When I say that "MB is managed by Germans", I mean MB Hellas...

Try to order one in England if they are being difficult in Greek dealers. The MB dealer I use is nowhere near my house but I have found them the most helpful (There are 3 bad ones closer that I will never use again). Try them if you need to +44 1494 672141 maybe they will post it to Greece if you pay for the shipping??

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

Is the dipstick the same in any/all 463 autos?

The reason I ask is, I was somewhat surprised when removing the dipstick cap on my 55, NOT to find one attached as in all my other autos over the years!!.

I have a SWB 463 circa 1992 + was wondering if its dipstick will suffice? Obviously if it is a little longer or shorter, this will render it worse than useless.

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

I am still slightly unsure how to use the dipstick. Normally you push in a dipstick all the way and pull it out. But with the 5sp one you push it in 'till the bottom of the stick makes contact ,presumably with the sump, and it stops. There is still loads of flexible stuff sticking out at the top. Is that it?

Yep it goes in almost all the way on some models and hardly at all on my SLK or an SL depends how long the tube is, so unlike the old ones which measure from the length of the tube/dipstick you will feel this one run into the sump, do not use any pressure just let it touch the sump otherwise it will show over-filled. Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

So to avoid buying a MB one you could use any long dipstick and just use the dimensions from a MB one. It is measuring the depth of fluid in the pan, pretty straightforward really.

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

You can buy the dipstick pretty cheaply from the US of A. In the end that's what I did:

In fact, this is the vendor I used... highly recommendable:

Re: Auto box dip-stick etc.

I paid around £30 from local dealer. Its the principle really, if you can simply use an existing stick why spend anything. I mean you could use a piece of 1/4" plastic pipe with appropriate marks transferred from a MB one

I have put this part number in on the Inchcape site but nothing comes up. I assume this is the one form my 2001 LWB G500. Any idea why is does not come up and how much the uk price is?

Also, will I need the filler?

Marty,
I think that it would be better to keep the dipstick and buy a G to match :P
