what would you choose
a volkswagen golf gti or a.....
Is either one of them diesel?
Is either one of them diesel?
No,
Looks like the GTI had a better line through the corner, or is the 55 aving im on the outside.
Both please. The Golf GTi is one of the few new cars I would have. But then I still live in the era when I had GTi's and could drive them at the limit on country roads without plod or other dim whitted road users getting in the way.
But then I would prefer a G and a:

Which is the ONLY MB saloon car which remotely interests me. The new ones are just Yuk with innards/interiors built out of recycled milk cartons
i like them 500e's too. they werent cheap in their day though. a friend of the family had one and it looked so good, they were slightly lowered and blistered in the arches, real old bahn stormers i think.
as for above, G any day, i would say GTI for every day, but id just spend the money on fuel for the g instead so i could drive that all the time!
I think that is a Polo GTI ?
Don't expect great economy from one though
I test drove the new Golf GTi & Focus ST before opting for my Audi .... on my local 'test track' I use both averaged around 20 mpg .
Mind you my Diesel A4 is meant to do into the 50's mpg but over 30000 miles it has averaged 35.6 mpg
Ah compromises, compromises
An Audi RS2 (which Porsche tinkered with as well) would be interesting as well.
But no matter how hard I think about it there is no ideal vehicle. G500 oh yes please, does pretty much everything, but G55's etc. why? After the initial amusement it's not an off roader and it will never be truly fast (the GTi above would leave it for dead)
So I'll just have to stick with my plodder of a true off roader which does pretty much everything else OK and wait for something like a 500e to drop in my lap to play in. But then where oh where can you actually use anything that goes quicker than 60mph in the UK anyway?

You obviously have never been on the road at the same time as piggy then....

But has he been on the receiving end of Ayatollah Brunstrum? (North Wales Police Chief Constable)
In a perverse way I can recommend the expensive, short sharp shock ban treatment that I received for speeding though ( this being the 1st time I was caught, but the speed was a little extreme). Didn't get any points, so didn't have that worry hanging over me for years but it did sort out my future public road speeding.
The plod who did me was quite disappointed that I was "local" though. He freely admitted that he was really after the Cheshire set who commute down to Abersoch every weekend (it was a Friday). :D
that is a polo, im pretty sure the g would leave it behind in the drag but maybe not the corners!
that audi a5 tdi is quite good on the juice tho and nicely fast!
as for the speeding, i think its just luck! my great uncle got done for 35 in a 30 (only done 8 thousand miles since 1996!) but my brother is always above average, does massive mileage and never been done, and thats with drving into london each day and theres more speed cameras than cars on the a40!
And then there is spider who does 128mph smiles and gets away with it.
they probably go, 128 in that big old thing, nah! little do they know hey spider!
Yep it's a Polo
It's all academic though I'm past paying out my own money on new cars
Even when someone else is paying they don't interest me (but then my choice of new car paid for by someone else is General Motors   who bu****ed Saab much the the way Chrysler did with MB.
Getting caught speeding is definitely like the lottery. Everyday I watch complete cretins that I would gladly snitch on to Ayatollah Brustrum and who with any luck would have their license shredded for life.  But because there are no Traffic Police and cameras tend to be easy to avoid they get away with it.
Anyway been there done that but now it's just not clever or funny. I guess kids (apart from bans!) change your outlook on these things.
And then there is spider who does 128mph smiles and gets away with it.
8) Just treated the poor guy like I would want to be treated. Professional and polite. However I did think they echoed Tom's comment - A 'shed' doing 128???? Naw way!
As for the choice -polo or G55 hmmmmmm
Polo - small, nippy, could now be called a baby ‘porker’, economical to run and service. The sensible, eco friendly, practical car, safe, good re sell value and well appointed.
G55 – Big on size, big on fuel, big on cost, big on not being eco friendly ….
Result = Spider Say's ' It will have to be the G55 then!' :P
G55 – big on not being eco friendly …
I don't know where you get this non being eco-friendly.... but I would argue that the G is more eco-friendly than most cars when taken dust to dust.
Did you know that the Prius is very un-eco-friendly cars when the full life cycle is taken into account?
me and spider share some strong views on eco friendly cars, and i do agree with you smart, the prius is a complete shambles whereas the g has a great dust to dust set up.
sadly fashion eco;s cant think that hard and see the prius as a great saviour (i think ill stop my rant now and save it for my uni work!)
Anyone see the top gear stunt where they got some redneck American to shoot a Pius (yes I can spell) to death. With a fully auto gun and maybe a pump action with solid slugs that they had probably picked up at WalMart on their way to the location.
Amusing in a childish way :D :D
Oh and just to rub it in if you run one as a company car your tax is either slashed to next to zero or is zero
Bit of a dilemma though, what if one of your friends buys one.........oh the shame of it

what price is dignity?
my friend said that if his aunt bought one she wouldnt be allowed in the house which i thought was quite durastic. i have to admit toyota have been so clever, everyone forgets all their pick ups and just thinks prius, great bit of marketing/backhanding!!!
its the owners little sense of being better than everyone that gets to me, i had one give me a load of stick in tesco's once and i was in a 1.4 306!!!! argh!
It has been shown the most eco friendly car when looking at teh big picture including manufacture etc is the JEEP WRANGLER .
For some reason politicians tend to look beyond science & facts

That's only because they don't count the G. It's also probably based on US consumption.
I think a lot of it was based on the age of teh factory, the tooling , presses etc
Erhumph
Or whatever
I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard fat bastard Clarkson shredding the Prius for being badly built ----uneconomical -----etc etc .
THEN commenting that any reasonable DIESEL would do better mpg.
Clarkson praising diesel
I must be in an altn universe.

Ermmm sorry to spoil everyones day on this G, Jeep, vw campers LR90's due to longevity and percentage numbers built still being driven etc are much greener than eco cars they aren't... the co2 produced in driving them is orders of magintude more than used in production and destruction. I was also using the cradle to grave stats that are out there on the web talking about lifespan but I am afraid it doesn't stack up.
My firm undertakes environmental audits for various organisations, they are rigoursly conducted to internal audit standards, some if this group directed me to varous university whitepapers that have systematically unpicked the arguments in the data on the web.
However it doesn't mean I like pious owners either  what does make sense is modern diesel technology and brake recovery systems, stop start technology and making cars lighter etc..
I wholeheartadly agree with Tom's comments re Toyota's marketing image earned by the pious and Lexus hybrids.
The sad thing is I cannot see my 6 year old driving a G in 30 years time as it I am betting in the UK it will have driven to extinction by varous classes of taxation...
So I just have to get him used to it in the field as soon as he can stand on the pedals :D

this is what gets to me too, ill finally be able to afford the g's and the toys but i wont be allowed to drive one or the tax will be more than a mortgage!
i rarely trust research papesr, just look at the one that went into linking autism and MMR jabs, a complete falasy but followed up by huge amounts of damaging hype. Research into environmental issues gets a lot of funding at the moment and its why so much is said. you have to think, why cant they use that funding with all the revenue from these stupid charges to come up with an alternative. surely the way to becoming a super power of a country is to have the key to all the energy worries and not sit complaining about carbon footprints?
Good Morning!
Tom

I don't often like to get involved with green issues and the like.......
BUT
I found it utterly heart rending reading the last comment G-Day made – and thinking very hard, on what currently is sadly a potential vision of the future, I have to make the following statement…..
‘I thought I lived in a country that praised and taught freedom of choice (well they did while I was at school), that my grandfather, great uncles and aunts fought for a way of life 60 odd years ago and that some of my friends grandfathers and relatives made the ultimate sacrifice, to secure for future generations the ability to live in a community that would give them rights and freedoms.
I do not call some one ‘dictating’ their choices in a supermarket car park or outside a school or any other place and then telling me they are ‘Facts’ and then telling me MY CHOICE is wrong, just who the Fcuk are they to tell me???? It is my choice, I saved my pennies, I work hard for MY RIGHT to BUY WHAT THE HELL I WANT! What give YOU the right to penalize my decisions when there is no concrete, definitive proof that my choice is doing what you said?
I tend to surround myself with like minded positive thinking people who have the same choice as me, who are free thinking , intelligent people, NOT SOME FAD FOLLOWING SHEEP, who because some politician or ‘Z’ list celebrity, heard from their agent that this will boost you popularity with some socioeconomic group or because a report is ‘sexed up’ to drive fear, uncertainty and doubt into our minds.
I, like my ancestors, am prepared to go to hell and back to defend you right to say what you want, ONLY if YOU are prepared TO DO THE SAME for me.
I do NOT encourage total anarchy, I do NOT encourage total capitulation either, I encourage people to try and think for themselves and RESPECT the fact that other people may want to make DIFFERENT CHOICES.
I make no apologies
(phew!)

I agree with you. I regard the W124 as the best Mercedes ever. And the E500 should be the pinnacle of it.
Cheers
Thank god the photographs were not in Spanish :)
