heater fan position I, II not working.
i think position I works sometimes though :?
rgds hus.
dirty contacts?
mine doesn't work either :D
position II works every so often & pos IV works always
Hus,
For me ('88 460 300GD) it was the resistor pack mounted inside the duct beside the fan... which is much the same as replacing the fan
The terminals are spades onto a mica board with big curly wire wound resistors and they get rusty in a rusty (by the sea) atmosphere as they are directly connected to the outside via the air intake for the fan.
Take off the fan switch and check behind it first for the right voltages as you move the switch .. you can get this out in situ by taking knob off, sliding all controls to one side and then easing half the panel off (it splits up the middle of the sliding knob part if you look carefully). The switch is pretty robust so I am not hopeful .. but it sure beats digging down to the fan
Fan is one speed.. you switch in different resistors (which get hot hence they are in the cooling fan enclosure) to get lower speeds.
i've got another take on this, as i can barely hear the fan in the first 2 positions, but it works weakly, as opposed to 3 and 4, which seem quite loud compared to the other two, so maybe the motor is tired and will not turn when in the first 2 positions, but when enough current/voltage flows through in the higher positions, it turns more freely?
Hi Hus the contacts are in the rotary switch ..pull the knob off... remove the switch from the bulkhead and use the stem as a wick to creep switch cleaner into the body of the switch whilst rotating frequently...may be the resistors in the circuit that have failed but 1V should be operational if that is the case...check the bottom of the heater air intake box in the engine bay ..it gets full of leaves and crud blocks the drain hole in the bottom which results in the box filling with water from rain or washing and flooding the front bearing in the fan motor..... and that is a whole heap of grief......if the fan motor is not working at all reach into the intake box and rotate the fan blades.. any stiffness is generally an indication that either the bearing is damaged... or the high load required to turn the stiff motor has whacked the resistors.....or burnt out the motor...check the appropriate fuse....
Hi Hus before screwing things apart check the free movement of the fan motor ..by hand with the switch in the "off" position..it is much more likely to be the motor or the resistors.if resistors then you need to meter the current a t each selection an that means getting to the back of the switch as there is a wire for each selection feeding the appropriate resistor.
Just fiddle with the switch a bit either side of the "click" for the various positions. Mine doesn't work sometimes, but moving it slightly from the usual position fixes is. The terminals will get corroded and not make contact. The only proper way to fix it is to remove the switch and clean the contacts after dismantling the switch.
I'm going to try terminal cleaner as suggested by Mr Fixwin. Spray it everywhere :D
Jeez they must go through gallons of that stuff at Heathrow
I must admit I have the same problem on my 461 , good post Huss .
Switch strip down is on the cards on a nice warm day :D

Huss the BGS is a 460 , the Norwegian is a 461 .
Photos will follow on a sunny day :D

Hella OEM fan motors .. shows full motor + fan with balancing weight... so this might be a source of cheaper motors for us..
Blimey...these 463 owners!
hey,watch it man,i am a 'dry cleaner!!'
where are the contacts maxwell?
