i know its not a g but its still a benz!

my little 190 has developed a horrible squeak on the front right hand corner, its when you turn the wheel and go over bumps and is only on the rhs.

ive coated the suspension strut in wd40 and or oil and it stops the noise for a few turns but then its back. i just took the wheel off and gave it a really good clean out and spray/oil but its still doing it. am i going down the right route or not?

any help would be great as im driving back to uni later and wont have garage or tools!

Tom

Re: some help please

ok, ive just looked on a 190 site and they seem to think ball joint, his shows the exact same symptoms...

"Well chaps, on my way home from Brooklands I started developing a squeak when turning the steering wheel. Now it has evolved into being there when I:

Turn the steering wheel,
Accelerate,
Brake,
Put any pressure on the front passenger side wing.

I put the car on the ramps and got my dad to bounce it while I listened underneath, and I've narrowed it down to being somewhere on the wishbone. Now, none of the bushes look shot, but I couldn't tell entirely which one was making the noise!

Any ideas, this is driving me nuts!"

the replies to that are all about the ball joint, i cant send the link as its just http://mercedes190.co.uk/ and not the exact topic, how annoying!

Tom Urgent, stop driving the 190 asap and get the ball joint replaced!! I used to have one of these with the same squeak, left it for a few weeks (WD40'd etc) and one day pulling into my driveway it collapsed and left me with the wing holding car up directly on the tyre  5 minutes before this happened I was doing 90 mph on the A34  Would have ripped the whole wheel and front axle/disc etc right off the car I was lucky was only crawling into driveway when it happened.

Re: some help please

bugger, ive done quite a bit of mileage now, ill get it home asap and sort it out, can anyone else back this up aswell?

if the tech rep reads this i apologise for not calling yesterdayday, my supposedly relaxing weekend consisted of the pool house catching on fire friday afternoon and being gutted melting the hot tub, all the furniture and the pumps and boilers, garden table spontaneously smashing its glass sunday afternoon then was topped off with my brother breaking his nose and cutting open that general area while jet skiing around the isle of wight! good times! plus parents are away so were trying to sort out all the house insurance! next time im staying in norwich!

Re: some help please

...well on the plus side, you're okay and hopefully no one is seriously harmed! You could also practise some surgery on your brother (or maybe in a couple of years' time)?

Re: some help please

Hi Tom, sounds like a very bad weekend so far  If you can avoid a problem with the Merc that will be something I suppose, I will give you all the info I had at the time, the ball joint is nylon inside and creaks when it wears out which warns you there is a problem, I was very clever and put some oil in the ball joint boot which cured the creak temporarily but it soon came back and then broke soon after. This was on an old 1985 190E, I had a 190E 2.6 later and never had any probs with that one so don't be put off 8) but get a professional to replace the ball joint asap for your own safety, they are not expensive from Euro car parts. Cheers Alex

Re: some help please

Thanks Pistonhead for the offer.
Tom I can only support the advice offered by other members here, as only yesterday a friend with a 124 (over 100k miles) lost his lower ball joint and the front wheel came off, after a few days/weeks of squeaking while turning. The old one was a right pain to get off!

Re: some help please

Thats why I love Mercedes so much you can always squeeze one more journey out of them where a lesser car would already be stranded by the side of the road. Mine got me exactly to my driveway and then had enough 8)
