Ultimate G
Gs have been around for yonks.
Which, according to the forum, is the best iterartion :?:
Every person will have an opinion depending on what they use it for/ Diesels for economy petrol for speed . Basic model to off road, plush models to cruise on road. The ultimate G is not the point, it is to have and use your G

I concur with every bit of what Roly says....
Well I'd love to own a 2000 G500 LWB but I would hate to use it for what I use my G today: serious off-roading. It would be a shame to put it through that. In this respect, my G is every bit the G I would love to own.
The ultimate has to be the G55 AMG with the Maclaren SLR engine!
I fall in love with my 86 230 every day, but mt heart is tempted by this 79 240gd cabrio - roll on summer.

Not very useful if what you do is off roading....
But a lot more useful if you plan is to impress the birds in Moscow's nightlife...

On second thoughts i'll try the G55 AMG with the Maclaren

 Yeah, suppose i could live with a G55AMG  but really the 55's don't do it for me. I'm not saying i'd turn one away if it were given to me, :D but i'd soon sell it and get a military 240GD open top, a 290GDT LWB van and a G270CDI.
Or, on the other hand, i could keep the 55 and move to Moscow

On second thoughts, I hear that the Belgrade nightlife is even better!
that's a good question as i often wonder why many of the G's for sale (eg, on autotrader) don't seem to sell, many of them have been on there for an eternity. maybe SWB 460's (which there are many of on AT) are not very desirabe? Or maybe those particular ones are not very good examples??
My ideal G would probably encompass three at least. A G320 Cabrio for having fun, a G320/G300 LWB for working, and a G290 LWB (possible van) for travelling "places". All diesel. Although maybe the cabrio could be a G500...
I thought Athens nightlife was pretty good. But never understood Greek women - jealous as hell if their partners flirt with someone, but they themselves know no bounds....
for me it would be a 461 290gtd. comfy but practical diverse vehicle, an everyday driver, to use for work , of road, and when cleaned for the family.
Funny how these discussions always come back to a 461 290gtd - the ideal vehicle - it will go anywhere in enough style, fast enough and last for ever.
Most importantly it caters for our dreams of adventure.
Ah bless you all
But why does it have to be cleaned up before one puts the family in :?:
Help.
Pls provide details regarding Belgrade nightlife.
It is nearby.
He, he, he... well to be honest the only info I have is that when I was about to be made redundant in Spain by my American company (due to complete closure of business) the only position they offered me was Country Manager Serbia and they said that I didn't even need to bring the family with me, 'cause Belgrade's nightlife would keep me busy... 8)

... though on second thoughts maybe it was just saleman's garbage!
Dear Torero,
Why not open a new revolutionary edition of the forum regarding matters pertaining to night life in connection with G-Wagens. Unchartered territory.
I think it will be a big hit with the neighbours ...
Just give me ideas....

I think the reason this happens is the 290gtd's tend to be far more basic then later 463's, especially the van version. So you tend to think, less electrics, must be a good thing. Most of the additional electrical stuff in a 463, if or when it goes faulty isn't going to leave you stranded anyway.
The 290td engine has the same electrics running the engine as any other modern diesel, so the "basic" feel to it, is not a reality,, it's all an illusion.
So, you may as well have a G400CDI and enjoy it.
Thats £5000 Piggy owes me when he come to sell his G
Well I think that the CDI is more fuel sensitive?
And I do know that the Volkswagen TDI's of the same vintage are reckoned to be very very reliable regarding the engine managment electronics, which I understand are at least mechanically similar to Merc's ie a Bosch rotary high pressure system.
And my local mechanic tends to Audi TDI's with 300,000 odd thousand on them and still going strong.
So :P :P :P
Well I think that the CDI is more fuel sensitive?
I thought you could "de-tune" them to be less sensitive. I know that piggy also has a water trap installed on his.
I "understand" that this additional water trap was found necessary after the first vehicles were in service and gave trouble, I would presume there was a recall?/ retrofit?
Re CDI's
and I may have mentioned this before?
I am getting old = doting
But J Deere tractors with one of the most recent CDI fuel sysyems were giving trouble in the UK, but only in the UK.
It was our relatively shitty "old standard" rebated ie red diesel that was at fault, no problems running on DERV or on the continent.
It was an option as far as I know.
I know that you can get conversion kits to let G270 CDIs run on WVO. The G270/280s are also used by various militaries so one would assume they could run on less than perfect grade fuel.
But I don't really know what I'm talking about - just postulating.
Now now Max,
tsk,tsk
The military only use the bestest fuel with a specification several pages long, like anything military.
OK they do insist on running diesels on what is basically parrifin / kero, but it is the best of parrifin / kero.
No crud in there.
And yes the CDI "G"'s will survive it , & with MB'S approval , though how often do they change the pump ??. Perhaps it is easier to make a common rail pump parrifin proof? A straight-forward high pressure pump should be simpler than one pumping whilst also metering out the fuel ?
But I DID NOT be aware that CDI's could be run on WVO :D

With a conversion kit. Elsbett makes them - but I have only seen it for the G270.
