North Cape and beyond 2009
Having brought my Norwegian Military G home to the UK last March,
Then at Eastnor Castle Howard kindly loaned me a book " Norways Arctic Highway "
http://www.amazon.com/Norways-Arctic-Highway-Rana-Kirkenes/dp/1873756739
That's it time to plan :?
First ask my very patient wife " Can I have four weeks to go to Norway ? "
Yes, said Sylvia but not this year go next year !! yippee !!!!
so 2009 it is, best time is July ,August " four weeks " .....
The plan is ferry from Newcastle to Bergan then head north , wild camping as much as posible and use some parts of the old road where we find them ,
Hmmm..............I need some like minded critters to ride north with ,
Dentsmithy Chris owns what must be the oldest 240GD in the UK wonder if he fancies it ???? Course he does :D ,
It will be fantastic to get that classic to the Cape :D
There are other known face that have expresed an interest in the expedition but I will let them post in their own time
So yes it's a long time away ....route planning to carry out ....when taking more mature Gs loads of preventative maintenance to do .........hopefully get some routes from our Norwegian members ...........camping equipment to buy and test .... :? ......rations to look into ............
And of course loads of drinking Tea/Coffee/ BEER  and talking about it :D
Two soft top 460Gs will be at the North Cape and up to the Russia border in 2009
got to go theres kit lists to prep :D .
Twodogs

Well been up as far as Narvik in a round about way .. up Sweden, down Norway to Hell for a "midnight sun" experiance road trip about 6 years ago(65 folk, 40 cars, 7 days of 300 miles/day with nightly antics..). The Noggy bit is well suited for diesel G's .. 50mph speed limit most of the way so no hold ups!
Top ends is meant to get more and more bleak ...but a mountain is meant to be climbed! .. no doubt the mossies and midges get even happier to see you (and that from a West coast of Scotland loon)... tends to curtail those campfire moments! .. but worth it for the view!
If you want the really around about way.. there is a summer only ferry (smells of fish!) from Shetland to Bergen except getting off Shetland except via Aberdeen is a 2 day trip instead of 24 hours .. otherwise you could add John O'Groats to the way points..

Heck I may have a car in one piece by 2009..

Edit. carefull if you follow any links from the above - soon end up in cat fights
Mark and I were having a look. It's some pretty serious miles and that isn't taking the coastal route....
ok so we added Tallinn on to it but its a minor detour...
Tallinn adds about 350-400 miles, so if I go to Nordkapp then I will come back via Estonia..... and if I'm in Estonia then St Petersburg is not much further.... and if I'm in that part of Russia then I might as well go to....
are we getting carried away yet?

Welcome to Norway!! :D
You may want to check out this link http://www.turistveg.no/index.asp?lang=eng showing the "National Tourist Routes" in Norway.
Some of these are TOURIST TRAPS of course - but worth visiting anyway.
In the northernmost part of the country (the county of Finnmark) there are approx. 770km of legal off-road tracks shown numbered on this map. http://www.fylkesmannen.no/Barmarksl%C3%B8yper_A1_des2005_svs7fJ5328405.... (Warning: 7.53MB)
Please check with the local police first :?: some weight and other limitations may apply.
...and do bring a GPS. I can supply coordinates for some of the places worth visiting.

Some interesting reading :)
The plan is ferry from Newcastle to Bergan
I'm sorry, but you have to change your plans. Today DFDS decided to close down this route and sell the ferry: article

frode , shocking news
Yes, I think they said on the news that the route is almost 130 years old.

Well I thought it would be fun to take the bridge via Denmark. Either that or perhaps stop off on the Shetland Islands enroute.... or better yet take one route out and the other back....
TwoDogs ... and others,
I've just followed your link from P3 to here to see what the latest status was of your 'North Cape and beyond' adventure.
Somewhere in this thread there was mention of some sort of meeting and/or get together around easter. Was there any, if so, what was the outcome?
Also, I read that your plan was to travel through a few countries like the Netherlands and Denmark. That's what I would do as well. I mean, travel through Denmark instead of taking a ferry from Holland to Norway. After all a G-wagen is not a floater  Mine likes to stay in touch (at least with one wheel) with terrain anyways.
Myself, I am still not sure if I can tag along (family extension due end of Aug. beginning of Sep.) but I am willing to help you guys out if I can. What I mean is I might be able to accomodate 'the group' here in my hometown ... camping in the semi-wild.
Also, since my sister lives in Denmark, I might be able to arrange a similar style of semi-wild camping while on route through Denmark.
Let me now what the status is of your plans so far and tell me if I can be of assistance during the Dutch and Danish 'stages'.
Regards,
Roughneck aka NorthseaRoughneck on P3
:D hi twodogs is this trip still on :?: it sounds like a great trip
'' Norways Arctic Highway '' is this the the old kings road ,,
i have an old magic lantern for projecting pictures ie woodbury slides ( will hopefully be getting some into print ) these are of fishing ports at and around Bergen in 1896 , then traveling along these old roads by horse n cart , some pics showing glaciers from old roads that have large stones placed at either side , the place names on these slides ,, Bergen , Hardanger North Cape , hellesylt church , puddefjord empoerors landing ,got about 80 slides of this area .
there is one pic taken on a steam sailing ship S.S.Trojon bound for the Outer Hebrides , with quite a few people on ,one guy dressed like Sherlock Holmes
photoraphers names on the slides ,, k.knudsen & co. bergen
also got some by j p gibson hexham churches n castles 1886
+ phm.co london
:D got some pictures printed from the glass slides think this one was taken about 1893 ,, I like the way the large boulder got left wedged above the water , must have been a rough job building this road :)
