Here are some pics of a 2008 car I snapped some pics of a few weeks back. I considered buying it as I was really struggling to find a G500 for sensible money. Then reality got the better of me and I decided to be sensible!

After thoroughly checking out this car, the salesman then informed me it was sold. The next available car that was coming in had an April build date, and wouldnt be in the kingdom until about June. That was too late for me as I didnt fancy waiting that long. But the colour combo of the june car was perfect for me... Black with cognac coloured leather. Just the combo I would have picked!

Anyway enjoy the pics.

looking good, and an unusual colour too. there was a time when a n/a 55 AMG cost that much..imagine! i miss the days of the low euro.

so it doesn't seem like they shift a lot of Gs in jeddah! i'm guessing the main place in the GCC is dubai, followed by AD and oman.

Correctomundo! I think there are probably about 30 Gs in Jeddah, tops. I'll ask my Merc man and find out.

hus i think that place is about 2000kms from sharjah! not exactly close, however i think air arabia (www.airarabia.com) fly direct from shj to jeddah, it is a semi-budget airline (first for the UAE!)

tinting windows in that corner of the world is discouraged as a. women don't drive (so they don't need it to "protect" themselveS) and b. it makes it harder to detect illegal activity. it was banned all over the gulf but recently the uae permitted a 30% tint to all cars on the side windows.

Jeddah is a 3 hour flight from Abu Dhabi. To give you some idea last year I was working in Brussels and the flight from Heathrow was only 1 hour!

So do you work in the Mid East as well?

Beautiful car! Thanks for posting!

Though on second thoughts... would YOU buy a Mercedes made in England?

On third thoughts.... would YOU buy anything made by Ron Dennis?

Not yet, maybe in the next year or two, but I come from Dubai.
Got relatives/friend in the KSA and neighbouring countries, and was there 2 Eids agio (October), but only Riyadh and Bahrain.
What keeps me in the UK (apart from the beautiful weather) are my studies, but nearing the end now. We had a G in Sharjah back when no one knew what they are (~86) and that's how the love started.

Cool. I used to live in Riyadh. A bit claustrophobic for my liking. Good luck with the studies. What you majoring in?

I understand what you mean; the last time I had been there was mid-90s, and boy did it scare me how different it was, even to Dubai! Fortunately this time round it seems they've curtailed the powers of the overzealous "motawa" and it is starting to become more like a regular city (just need to get used to singles/family seating in restaurants)!

Thanks for the good wishes. What are you down there for? Sorry if you already stated it somewhere else on the board. I'm doing (don't laugh) road & vehicle safety; unfortunately there is a big market for that in the Mid-East!

Btw. The finish on the C-DTM is weird, like it's been stuck on. This firm does the same thing in the UAE, for about 40,000 riyals you can get your favourite supercar covered in any colour/scheme you want, even matt black.

Mind if I ask, what took you there, and how long ago was it? There used to be a time when it was the ideal living quarters for people working in Dubai, before too many people caught on to the idea!

just to compare a recent find on dubai's classifieds:
http://www.gnads4u.com/doc.html?_a=view&id=2010729

2005 G55 for 320,000 (dhs or riyals), 60k cheaper than a new 500! 35,000kms and FSH.

2 years in Dubai about 3 years ago .. oil industry .. my villa was up by the snow slope overlooking the F1 track (Al Bhasa).. except then it was the edge of town with few neighbours. My company has started to put folk into appartments/flats as villas are too expensive .. glad I am out of that!

Re: 2008 G500

you did well to reach sharjah while living in dubai, most people don't bother, but their loss, as the northern emirates are a treat to explore if you like that kind of thing. now that area behind the ski slope is notorious for traffic jams!

Re: 2008 G500

"you did well to reach sharjah while living in dubai"

I know what you mean, some folk seem to want to live little euro/us ex-pat existance which is v.scary. .. but I drove virtually every tarmac road in UAE except never got to the bit below Abu Dhabi (tried from Al Ain and the map showed a road... well after 60 miles good road and 35 miles of car sized potholes in sand that ate a tyre.. you get to a portacabin with soldiers drinking tea beside the empty quarter.. and the road to Abu Dhabi turns into a 30% drag up a sand dune. .. well with no spare at 4pm that was too much! On the way back on a space saver I picked up the UAE Colonel who was in charge of maps for UAE (Patrol had run out of fuel and no one else was going slow enough on the road to stop!).. well pre GPS mapping they did not want accurate maps so the ground was different .. still no road for 60 miles in Google for the good bit! ... in fact looking at it I was inside Yeman half the time!

Did quite a few non tarmac roads (Golf VR6 with 4wd ... loved surprising 4x4 by driving past off road!.. normal looking Golf did that and you need 2.5t of steel to do it?)

Re: 2008 G500

Good story! Surely you mean Oman, not Yemen?! I'd be impressed if you went that far south, surely must've taken days. The border south of AD is a bit fuzzy, I remember we once went in a large party (4 cars, all Westerners except for us in a 280GE) and accidentally stepped into Omani territory. How did we find out? A machine gun on an old army pickup met us on a dirt track, and directed us to stop.
After a lengthy investigation and cross-examination of all drivers they established we were not a threat, and allowed us to refeul in Omani territory (with escort) and leave back to the UAE, with an undertaking not to "wander" into their lands again!

I hope one day I can do the same going to every corner of the country, with Google maps and some mobile/satellite coverage, and paper backups. Sounds like you did some rallying in that VR6, you must've seen those beduins driving their 560SELs and Chevy Caprices to their barns (after it rains)!

Re: 2008 G500

Your right .. Oman .. Yeman is a little further  ... Omanis were pretty friendly .. ended up the wrong side of the border at least once .. road had 2 speed bumps about 2-3" taller than Golf ground clearance just before the border to slow the Toyota Landcruiser based pickups up a little.. I had no option but to drag the back end of the car over the humps  Border guards wanted to see my passport but after a bit of Arabic that I could not understand and a little finger waggling .. they let me out of their country! In fact you had to go into Oman to get to one part of Dubai and insurance at that point became very dubious.. shut your eyes and drive

Re: 2008 G500

Drove the road from Sarjah to the Omani border crossing via a hydrostation of some kind 2 years ago in a Subaru impreza turbo, lovely vehicle but half the roads were washed away, a full sized 4x4 would have been more ideal for the conditions.
Locals very friendly everywhere, even Omanis at the border.

Regards,

Mike

Re: 2008 G500

Agreed the Omanis are a bit more friendly than us UAE-ians (Emaratis to use the correct term); I guess the novelty of tourists has worn off hehe.

But I admire the adventurer spirit of most Westerners (if you don't mind me using that word) I see adventuring in the Gulf. On Christmas day last year, we were at the Intercon in Al-Ain, and imagine our surprise when parked outside were a couple of 4x4s (on Saudi plates), a Nissan Patrol and I forget the other one, they were sand-coloured, and loaded to the brim with kit and supplies, and had two Caucasian families with children in them, clearly having a good time! Made me grin...only thing left was them being in a G!

Re: 2008 G500

Never found a less than friendly Emariti, even secret police were fair enough =:-0 .. challanging systems of control to navigate sometimes but all fair enough in a place where most of the population are not of that nation and coming from a different start point to the West. No comment on where my landlord's brother was "engaged" at that time (begins with an A..) but different country with different world views.
