I bought some numberplate lights from a main dealer a few years ago - they certainly didn't cost that much!

That is correct. That supplier is US-based and offers parts not normally supplied by US-stealers, importing them and charging premium prices.

You can bet that you friendly UK dealer will be much more competitive, pricewise, than that.

Well I really ought to flog you the two I got .. never did get supplier to pony up the last one.. Lucas not too good! ... I went for a bit of bling and got some dull chrome plated rear number plate lights.. they do have screw terminals instead of OEM spades.

OEM supplier is Hella .. most motor factors will do them if you ask and go to the generic rear number plate section of the catalogue (I got the whole catalogue last time but it is 26 miles away at home :( ) .. you cannot get the exact MB part it will be physically the same outside.

From Stealer
000 544 34 34 Description: LICENSE PLATE LAMP
Original German description: (KENNZ.LEUCHTE)
Weight (kg): 0.054
Official Price: 10.50 Euro -> GBP after VAT

Hella
The only spade type is 2KA-997-011-021 which is black plastic. There are two steel covered versions with screw terminals; 2KA-997-011-011 in chrome finish and 2KA-997-011-001 which is black. These are 82x26 with 31mm height and two M6 studs 45mm apart sticking out 17mm.
An alternative Hella is 2KA-001-389-101 in 10 pack in black plastic. Spare covers are 9BG-1190721-001. This is 80x28 with 31mm height and seems similar studs but not spade/screw details.

There was a rear vent on ebay for a £5+£5 p&p.. not sure if it was the correct side for you.. but again dealers are not that much of daylight robbery on these cars .. I bet you would wince a lot more if you asked for some of the S class etc parts..

When you do get your vent covers tie them to the body with a small cable tie - you'll never loose them again.

Re: Number Plate Lights and vent covers

First hit on Google "Mercedes car dealer"
http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedkingdom/mpc/mpc_unitedking...
.. pick "find a retailer"..

http://e-services.mercedes-benz.com/dsc_gb/Dispatcher.jam?businessCase=D...

Take Chassis number and go round the back for that dodgy "parts" counter where all the hardened addicts congregate ...

.. much the same as any other make of car.. just this lot make you think you are going to flinch when the price is mentioned because of the flash showroom out the front .. so you get very surprised when it is actually reasonable sometimes..

..oh and 5W torpedo bulbs.. but there are actually a couple of sizes .. guess would be the 25mm one. At £3.60 you could just get 3 so they all match.. OEM ones are actually the metal ones I think... (I had 3 different ones on my car and the oldest was metal..)

MB Ketttering used to post out parts but not sure if they still do.
I deal with MB in Blackburn and Bradford and find them very helpfull - you could try them on postage. I think the GWOA used to have an informal deal with Kettering for a club discount - if they don't want the business anymore we should try Blackburn or Bradford. If you can't get into a dealers then ask to speak to someone who knows about G Wagens, they love 'em or hate 'em.

Let us know how you get on.

Or there's Inchcape at Oxford. V good in my experience. They are happy to take phone orders, not just via website. Excellent site for getting a price if you know the part no even if you don't buy from them.
