Would knowledgeable people consider a 245/75-R16 tire as prohibitively narrow for a 7.5J-16-ET63 wheel?

Regarding tire diameter, factory originals 265/60-R18 meassure at 30.5196 inches & 245/75_R16 are at 30.4685 inches: Is this close enough?

My reason for asking is that I have found locally a set of new Cooper Defender STT tires for reasonable money. I am tempted as I already the wheels aging gracefully in my garage.

Absolutely not. I have 235/85R16 tyres fitted to 6"x16" rims and no problems.

Absolutely. No problems there either....

I agree with Morty, no problems with the wheel and tyre combo, just put the power down carefully 'till you get used to them as they will behave very differently from what you are used to.

Another disadvantage is that the wheel will tend to be the first casualty when kerbing or mounting anything on the side of the road, as a wider tyre affords the wheel some protection. Mind you most kerbs are lower than the sidewall so that shouldn't be a problem, but some are double-height (think bus-stops etc).

Thank you all.

An alternative size offering better protection of & closer conformity to the 7.5J wheel might have been 265/70 R16 (tire diameter 30.6062 inches).

Nevertheless, local wisdom (to which I am not a contributor as I do not know the subject) maintained that a 245 footprint is sometimes preferable to 265 for rough conditions & such an extreme tread design (there is a good & inconclusive thread on Pointed Three).

Perplexing matters...
