Before I blindly go taking the car apart I thought it prudent to ask for guidance.

I have to change one of the window opening switches on the centre tunnel, they're located just behind the gear lever and wing mirror adjustment control on a sloping section of the wood fascia (I am doing both so they match as the pattern has changed).

I wonder whether it is possible to remove the wood top panel on it's own in order to gain access to the underside of the switches.

If not, how much of the tunnel do I need to remove to gain access to the switches and connections beneath?

Any help appreciated.

If your 463 is the same as my 99 model, it is very easy. Lift off the leather boot on the transfer case lever and look under it, towards the wood trim panel. There is a single cross head screw that holds the wooden panel in place - you may have to feel around for it and you'll need a short handled screwdriver. Simply remove this screw and then lift up the panel from the rear and pull it off backwards.

The early 463s also have 2 screws in the vertical section at the front under the centre consol. Phillips heads, easy to remove. The panel doesn't lift very high before the cables reach the end of their slack so you need to remove the connectors which kust slip off easily.
Don't throw out any of the old switches, I'm sure that they could be fixed given a bit of time.

PS Called to Marty the other day to see the BEAST in the flesh. Went home dejected and sad at what I had to look at in my garage after his. But the struggle continues.
