W463 Diesel fuel problem solved
I have solved the 6 mile fuel starvation problem, as some of you said the filter in the sender unit could be blocked but in my G’s case that had been removed.
So this weekend I started to do what Pistonhead suggested to flush the system and test the fuel lines. The first thing I done was to remove the air cleaner filter box to see all the fuel pipes below, on closer inspection I could just see tucked right under the air cleaner box and against the block was a inline fuel filter. This filter was the same colour as the top water hose “pot black”. I removed it and I could hardly blow threw it. I ran down the local garage, they had one in stock back home and fitted it. You guest it fuel problem solved it runs like a dream and with more power as I have better fuel pressure.
Is the inline fuel filter standard fitting on a 463 or was it put there to supplement the filter gauze that was removed from the tank sender unit?
Thanks for all the tips and postings.
Griff

Standard I would say. Mine certainly has one and the Haynes manual for the equivalent E Class shows it. My 463 doesn't have the fuel tank filter either.

Hi an "inline" filter is standard on both the 460 and 463 diesels to protect the cartridge filter......the question is where did the inline filter contamination come from??? mainly from the moisture generated gunge in the bottom of the fuel tank...clean the tank or keep a couple of spare filters handy.......

Re: W463 Diesel fuel problem solved

i had bad problem with the fuel system on my 603 engine in my cab :(

it turned out to be that the mechanic fitting the engine NEVER changed the main diesel filter canister

well it made a big difference to say the least :!:

but when i told my new mechanic about the inline small plastic filter he said my engine never had one :?

is that possible? the engine was out of a W124 of 88-89 vintage.

or maybe he couldnt see it

glad to hear that you sorted out the problem griff

Inline filters
I was a plant fitter for 25 years on the opencast sites and quarry's in the North, when we got small diesel plant in i.e pumps, lighting towers etc we fitted a inline filter as standard this was because most small static plant was fueled up from cans (never clean) and the inline filter caught all the large lumps before they reached the main filter. Not many of the plant machines had inline filters fitted from new they only relied on the standard fitted fuel filters.
My G fuel problem was the inline filter was almost impossible to see these filters are very good the one I got from the garage is a paper filter, I have now got a couple of filters from the Merc dealer (£1.86 each) and they have plastic mesh inside so effectively you can back flush them if you were stuck.
But these inline filters could be fitted from the factory of added at a later date who knows, but the merc dealer have them with the Mercedes logo on so they must be fitted to some models, I'm on my sixth Mercedes car but you can't see much under the bonnet these days.

Re: W463 Diesel fuel problem solved

As it is a conversion it would have been up to the converter to install an inline filter. It is in the fuel line away from the engine.

Re: W463 Diesel fuel problem solved

you are correct john, but i was not aware of the need for an inline filter.

but then again shouldnt it have had one fitted from standard? even my old old 460 diesels had them as standard from 82 onwards! maybe it has one tucked away somewhere out of sight... i will check it this summer.

Re: W463 Diesel fuel problem solved

Thanks for the feed back,

Just for general information, the w460's are fitted with a straight in-line filter, where as the w463 are fitted with an angled (90 degrees) in-filter. These should be renewed at every 24ooo miles intervals or at every second, B - service.
