Wheels / Tyres
Hello
I am new to the GWOA having just purchased a 300GDS. Previously had a 300GD about 6 yrs ago. The new Wagen has 16 inch alloy wheels fitted with 235/60/R16's. The wheels on the previous G looked bigger in the archs. The new vechile wheels look ok, however they seem a bit small in the archs compared to my last vehicle. I need new tyres, so is it best to fit larger profile tyres or bigger wheels?
Thanks
:D
I"ve just gone through something similar, having 18" factory wheels on my G (with 285/60/18 tires). To improve my ride quality and increase my off road reliability I am in the procees of switching to 16" factory wheels with 265/75/16 tires.
Wheels are considerably more than tires, and at least on this side of the pond tire some tire dealers will give a short period to ensure satisfaction. Try the tire rout first.

Hello Elliot. By your description, I gather that yours is a W463, therefore fitted with 6x16" "star" alloys, but can you confirm model and year?
If this is the one, my advice would be to fit 235/85R16 BFG All Terrain rubber to those rims. They will increase the overall gearing, which would make motorway cruising more relaxing and even more economical while increasing the ground clearance, which is excellent for off road....
You could look at the imperial sizes for your 15" alloys,
31x10.5
32x11
33x11
from people like Goodyear and BFG

If the wheels you have currently are 6x16 then I agree with Morty. go for the 235/85R16 BFG All Terrain or Mud Terrain, depending on what you plan to do with the truck. Do not be tempted to fit tyres that are any wider on those rims. If you do decide to go wider then the rim width will need to go up too, so new wheels required. For example, 265/75R16 requires a 7x16 rim. The overall diameter stays much the same as the latter tyre has a lower profile.
If you are going to be towing, stick with the tyre size you already have, which I suspect is a 205R16 or 225R16.
As Mortinson says, the larger diameter tyres will step up the overall gearing to improve cruising, but will also reduce acceleration through the gears and lower drawbar pull. This is only a problem if you intend pulling heavy trailers. If you do change tyre diameter, check the speedometer for accuracy. At 70mph it may over-read by up to 10%, but it must not under-read. Putting larger tyres on will make it under-read when compared with the original fitment.
is there any particular reason to shay away from 15" rims?
i love mine (as opposed to 16") because of the much cheaper and more range of available options in tire department.

No
hi every body im new to the forum, im trying to renovate 1984 g wagon does any body know if wheel studs off steel wheels will fit mercedes alloy wheels if so where can i find them? post me back please rob
No there longer for the MB alloys. I believe there is a recent thread under "Parts Wanted"looking for steel wheel bolts he may have a set of alloy wheel bolts to trade...

ebay or main dealer
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/16-ALLOY-WHEEL-BOLTS-M14-X-1-50-60-DEG-TAPER_W0QQi...
£20.50 for a full set delivered.
M14x1.5 .. I would guess Radius head but check for yourself.
58mm overall length for steel, 69mm for alloy .. not sure what that is under the head length.. you should have a sample there to measure for the steel and add that to get alloy length.
thanks everybody im ordering now off ebay

The advert says 60 degree taper. There are also 3 different radii for radius seated bolts - 12, 13 and 14mm.
Audi bolts are M14R12 and these would just have contact at the corner of the bolt holes and would risk the bolts self-loosening at worst, or deforming the bolt seat area at best..
Bolts are really critical! And usually the shiniest surface coatings provide the least corrosion resistance. They should also all be stamped with "10.9" for the strength grade, and with a maker's mark for liability tracing..
Thanks for that. The wheels are not the original star alloys but I was maybe looking to fit them at some point. The ones I have seen are all 15 inch though. The vechile is a 463 SWB registered in 1991 and the alloys on it at the moment are in very good condition but tyres are shot. I think the higher profile tyres is the way forward at the moment. I have been looking at a few 4x4 specialist tyre companies and only seen up to 75 profile but I'll check out the BFG's
thanks.
