Immobilisers - CoC - SVA - Advice required.
Can someone please help me with the following:
How I can get confirmation of the fact that the immobiliser on my G500 complies to Thatcham category 2 as I was told it does.
Clive Watkins of MB homologation in Milton Keynes has told me that I can not get a certificate of conformity for my G500 from Mercedes because it was sold by Puch rather than MB and in 1998/9 G500s sold in Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Bosnia H.... and one or two other places were sold by Puch and elsewhere by Mercedes Benz. The vehicles are of course identical in every respect.
So I have booked my G in for an SVA where DVLA will check the vehicle over on a one off basis to ensure it complies to european standards !
This all sounds very odd to me but needs must.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience of this please ?
Many thanks
Micky
Unfortunately you are in a difficult position. I nearly bought a 2000 G300 TD Puch but was put off as I could not get the paperwork to bring it in.
Have you already purchased it? If so
1) Alarm - you can get an independent alarm specialist to certify your alarm. I think this was discussed on the forums previously. You could also change insurers. I never needed to provide proof - I just had to state it was OEM and the car was for the European market.
2) CoC - as far as I know this is pretty much true. I spent quite a while trying to sort this out.
I think your only option is to contact MB Germany or Graz directly and explain that you need to get certified documentation stating that your G is identical to the model offered by Mercedes.
3) Insurance - you haven't mentioned this one yet but I had an impossible time sorting this out too. The only way I managed to work around it was to insure on its chasis number as well as by providing documentation that the vehicle was equivalent to a Mercedes. It wasn't as strict as the documentation needed for homologation though.
In the end I gave up.... far easier to buy a Mercedes badged one in Germany.
Good luck!
I think you may have a cat 2 impb only. try locking it and opening the door with the key that comes out of the fob.
I had to have an alarm fitted to mine. PM me with your number if you want to discuss.
I have insurance and an MOT and I think an SVA will do the trick. There is no reason however why a vehicle sold in 1998 into an EU country (Austria) or even Switzerland should not be not European compliant. The real question is why MB are not taking appropriate responsibility.
The problem isn't so much MB, but rather that the Puchs (yet alone Gs) were never really sold in any quantities if at all in the UK. So the car rarely comes up in any records whether its DVLA, insurance or whomever.
The other thing to keep in mind is that sometimes the manufacturer is listed in the UK as Puch, Steyr-Puch, Daimler-Puch..... makes trying to get anything done very fun...
You need to remeber that the car is a joint effort between Mercedes and Steyr-Puch so each partner had the right to sell it in their respective countries.
Which of course causes lots of problems....
I disagree Maxwell. MB are just v unhelpful. They could supply this if they pulled their finger out. The fact is that if there is not a slug of cash in it for them they are not interested.
However, your car should have come with a cert of conformity.

I have found that MB world at Brooklands have been excellent so far. They can get most things and unlike my local dealer, actually can tell the difference between a GL and a G! (long story getting some head light bukbs for it - once again thanks Jonny)
If you call them, ask for Gordon Francis (service Team Leader) and tell him Mr. Askew suggested they could help.

Ya I have had great service from MB as well. The problems I had with the Puch were trying to get people (insurance, dvla etc) to recognise that it was a Mercedes.
But to interject interfrastically ( refer Blackadder )
Our Steyr Daimler Puch comes up on the Farmers Union insurnance Screen, indeed a list of possible models, which one will that be sir?
Cheers

Dear Maxwell
Thanks

What irritates me is that I have Mercedes Benz plastered over every document and data sheet and manuals and yet MB say they can't issue a certificate of conformity for a vehicle sold under their name and bearing their name. I first approached MB about this mid December and it has taken one month to be told they can't assist. Such is life !
I will try and get the alarm certified by someone.
Many thanks
