Hi. I'm waiting for my new engine which comes from E-klass from 1998, it's 177h.p. , I guess it will do the job!

I'm wondering if my transmission will fit? It's 5 step manual transmission 717.445 , it's standart for my current 290GD from 1994.

P.S. If there is something that I should know before starting the conversation, please let me know, maybe someone already done this and know what I have to do?

Re: New motor, 300 TD V24 but what transmision?

I think that this would be the same engine that is fitted to the G300 TD from about 1996-2000. If it is it should make it easy for you as you can just look up workshop information for it.

MB stopped putting manual transmissions in Gs sometime in the mid 1990s. I believe the reason (which I am sure Mortinson will expand upon) had something to do with the engine torque vs the weight of the car would cause the transmissions to fail...

But I am just speaking from hearsay...

You will also need to change the oil pan as the G pan was modified for offroad use/more extreme angles.

I prefer to use manual transmission, since this G will be used only for hard offroad drive. Otherwise I would use the automatic transmission which comes with the new motor...

About the oil pan, do you have the part number for it? I dont have 300 TD VIN to find it...

The G auto transmission is very good off-road and many would argue better than the manual in this particular case. They haven't sold a G with manual transmission in about 14 years and that includes all the military Gs.

Take a look at the extreme driving people like Piggy or some of the Orc Gs are doing.

As for oil pan take a look at the Russian EPC site. I think the oil pump may be different too. You can use the same site to compare the engine from the sedan.

MB automatic transmissions are far stronger than manuals and will resist abuse far better than manuals.

As for a VIN, try this one: WDB46333117106549

I'm still thinking of manual transmission and found the 6 step manual transmission from CLK to be the best choice ?

Yes. Best choice. To have the gearbox kaputt in no time. You have been warned, though

I can't drive hard off-road with automatic transmission, if not that one, what manual would you recommend?! I know fried who is driving 350TD with the same 6 step transmission and there is not any problem ...

Can't drive hard with it? Why not? MB auto transmissions are used in the G in some pretty extreme conditions.

look at the automatic transmission fitted to the Haaglunds tracked vehicle for MB autobox performance. some military surplus with Jackson and Witham Special Vehicles you might get a G'box from them

Re: New motor, 300 TD V24 but what transmision?

Now after I took-off the motor from the E-class it comes the problem with the diesel pump. The original pump fitted with that motor is electric with board computer which control both pump and the automatic transmission. So I came to decission to remove the electric pump and place mechanical. Some guys told me that the pump from the older motor 300TD (144hp) does not work with that motor and they said to find pump from 350TD , is this correct? I was told that the 300TD 144hp pump will fit my 300TD 177hp ??? Let me know please!
