Started at 08:00 finished at 17:30   First proper lane of the day Strata Florida then justed stayed around Builth Wells, Radnor, Newton etc must have done over 35 miles of lanes, everything from axle twisters to deep mud (only just out with diff locks) the river crossings on SF (7) plus three others and some steep drops down the waterfall on SF plus some others that were a bit hairy.

Paul Humphreys who some of you have met acted as leader an photographer. Link below takes you to landovernet.com, then click on his photobucket link to look at his link for pics of me and the landies.

Now to the problem just as I finished my G developed a noise on take off that disapeared above 20 mph, the noise happens irrespective of being in 2 wheel drive, hi or low 4x4 and with or without difflocks on. It sounds just like the noise of a release bearing on a clutch that that whines on take up, which is interesting as its a auto

Re: Mid Wales today

Sorry I couldn't make it today, thanks for rubbing it in John :( :(

Looks like an excellent day. PH sent me the route on memory map so maybe I'll make it another day.

Mark, Don't look. The water is more than 3inches deep on some pictures

Re: Mid Wales today

Russ it was good but could have done with your suspension lift, on the waterfall I ended up with the front bumper on the ground first, mind you into only chipped the number plate  and there were a lot of G diff shaped groves on some later rutted lanes that the lifted defenders sailed over, mind you the diff locks helped on the tricky bits when the LR's were going sideways in the mud :D

Would you mind sending me the map file i think I am going to invest in the s/w and start keeping copies of all Paul's routes. apparantly the whole uk only needs 30gb at 1:50000 (I could be wrong)

I have an old 4+ years rugged IBM laptop that would be great in the G, I portable TV mount screwed to the dash should be ok as a mount. Problem is the USB port is toasted (it has wireless) so I guess I will need a serial or wireless conected sat reciever to link up but then only one cigarette lighter to power both devices.....

Have you thought about CB radio for the off road trips, methinks a pub session to discuss technology and route planning is called for :D  PM me and we can arrange a beer...

PS with that route we could do a mega day in March (when the gap opens again), start of with the Gap then Sarn Helen then Strata florida on the way back..... could really do with on vehicle having a winch though just in case

Looks fab. You must have lots of open lanes still.

Re: Mid Wales today

We are lucky in that were I live there a loads of lanes in shropshire, powys, wrexham, flintshire etc. Also lots of green laning clubs who are very active in ensuring that access is maintained on Boats, trying to ensure RUPPS are overturned if possible etc. plus these guys are out with diggers and helpers to patch up popular routes like the Wayfayers so that people stay on the authorised route and don't churn up the surronding areas so that the councils have no excuse to close them.

I am thing of joing Glass or CRAG (www.crag-uk.org) as you can get loads of info on which lanes are open and how to keep them open. These guys are trying to partner locally with Shropshire & Powys police and local authorities to keep the lanes in use for responsible 4x4 users.

Very lucky to be able to go out with them and take advantage of there local knowledge, thats why I am keen to get the mapping s/w and get copies of all the open routes in North and Mid Wales plus the borders...

Awesome and inspirational for us prospective G owners. I am glad to see you using a LWB. Is that Auto or manual? Would an Auto cope with all that laning???

I'd love to take a off road bike across there but not the waterfalls. :)

Re: Mid Wales today

Dyno Soar,

The last time I tried similar lanes on my xr400 kixck start honda I ending up in the ditch with bike on top of me, not ideal :D You just wouldn't get through the depth and distance of the mud and stay legal by staying on the right of way. Bikes are getting a very bad name round here for going "off-piste" and damaging SSI's which brings the risk of closure to all traffic. Its at such a stage that the local serouis clubs are shopping the bikers to the police to stop them and thereby have a chance of keeping the lanes open.

The police in Powys are now using an umarked white LR110 and filming 4x4's and bikes when they go off route.

BTW mines auto and its absolutley fine, some would say easier, provided the first gear lock out is working which quite often doesn't on older 460 auto's which can make descents a litlle faster than you might like :D

LWB no issues other than tight bends with diff locks on, escape angles no different. The main challenge I have is that most of the local guys running LR's all have lifts and snorkels so my river crossings are a bit more fraught than theres and the extra couple of inches ground clearence are very useful, I will have to consider that soon.

Re: Mid Wales today

Ok I hear you loud and clear. However there is no way I'd ride a bike on the road. I am sure there must be some responsable bikers out there. :)

I am hoping my G purchase to be an 460 auto. I am looking forward to it.

Re: Mid Wales today

hands up here for a responsible biker, used to race in the enduro british championships. i do sadly agree that a few are ruining it though making all sports harder to enjoy. as for ending up in a ditch, know the feeling, i ended up passing blood for two weeks after one even and i dont think i know a single rider that hasnt been seriously injured.

cant afford to ride or drive at the moment though!

My word thats an endorsement for not getting a Bike... EVER!

I don't want to risk my health like that. Biking is so much FUN though. HHmmnn the wife thinks I am mad for wanting a bike and now I have a son, I 'm think long and hard about it.

Was debating bringing mine to Yorkshire next weekend but I've cracked the head tube so would be limiting what I could do with it anyhow.
