Happy New Year Chaps,

This cold snap has proved too much for my G's battery :(

The current battery is a little small and does not have the cold cranking power required.
Question is what size battery do people recommend? Is the size in the Manual suffiucent for lots of stop starts when off road or should I go for something a little bigger (83 300GD)? Budget is an issue post X-mas :( . Or should I add a battery and go twin?

Cheers
Grendle :)

Re: Battery

Hi Grendle Happy New Year...the MB original specification battery for the diesel 460 G is Manufactured by Varta and Deta..the battery is square to the dimensions of the tray and has six filling caps in two rows of three. the weight is 46 kilos empty and the neg' and pos' posts are conical and positioned diagonal or in line..and now the nasty bit..if you can get one for GBP 125 you got it with a discount.." note! the same batteries are used in tanks.. wired in series to give 24v at 250AH the part Number for the Deta battery is 62523 rated at 12v 125AH

Re: Battery

Thanks for the replies chaps :)

I can see why the previous owner fitted the current one!

I'll go round my local factors and see what the best deal is on a 125 amp job. I was I admit expecting to pay @ £100...It will have to be done, jump starting..in 0 degs with the wife and kids looking on demanding to get to school/work on time is not good for morning stress levels

Cheers
Grendle

Re: Battery

If you ask for a '6TN' battery at one of the commercial factors you might possibly get a better deal but regardless these are good batterys and should give you 6 or 8 years easily. Here is alink to the varta site (just don't look at the price)

Re: Battery

And a "6TN" is?
Ps
the as battery in our Van is a rectangular one as long as the tray is wide, but quite high
it is 100 amp hour / 680 amp
a whole screed of nos on top
600 o32 068 uk 249
cant even mind what I paid £85 / £90 ?
seems the price of lead and therefore batteries has rocketed in the last year or so

Re: Battery

I've been reading up about battery charging and resurecting cells - don't throw them out yet - there may be hope. I'll report back if any news.

Re: Battery

Made a mistake and looked at the price
I don't mind the paper work I've just ruined but how do I get the tea out of the key board :? Spat it out all over...I've paid less than that for a G Wagen
Intrested in the re-energising batteries senario though.

Re: Battery

@ grendle

Optima US made no maintanence If i'm correct about 900 cca (cold cranking amp) My first still works, lost a little of it's power but I don't think tis is strange after 10 years.
Another advantage: there is no acid in. You can mount them anyway even upside down or on sideways they will never leak.

all info can be found here
I believe i payed last year about 195 Euro for a red top
Expensive but quality has it's price.
With a little imagination and ingenuity even 2 battery's can be installed at the place used for one merc batt. ( this on a 460)
Hope you have something with this info
Best regards
Dirk

Cheers Dirk

Plymouth Battery Center came back with £189 all in . In fact I quoted the part numbers and the bloke knew it was for a G Wagen....going round tomorrow to look at the options. The Red top is cheaper!

Re: Battery

Hi it appears what you require is a 12v battery that is....the right height.. the right length the right width ..with the correct posts and posts that are in the right position for your existing connecting cables......ideally rated at a minimum 100ah .....(85ah is right on the borderline for the diesel) for about GBP 100...AVOID Chinese mnfctrd batteries like the plague..... happy hunting...........
