The new Popemobile
New Mercedes-Benz for the Pope
Stuttgart/Rome – In future, Pope Benedict XVI will present himself to the
40,000 or so pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square in a shining white, open-top Mercedes-Benz G-Class during his public audiences on Wednesdays.
The new "Popemobile" was created over a two-year development period in close consultation with the Vatican, and has now been personally handed over to the Holy Father.
This open official car, which the Head of the Catholic Church requested for use during fine weather, was developed by Mercedes-Benz on the basis of the G 500.
It is equipped with a folding windscreen and hand-rails, and like its predecessors it is painted in the Vatican mystic white finish. The interior is likewise white, and is accessed via steps lined in red at the rear. The Pope holds his audiences in a standing position, so that he is easily visible to all his flock.
The Holy Father is continuing a long tradition with the new Popemobile from Mercedes-Benz. Pope Pius XI was the first to receive a Mercedes-Benz as an official car in 1930 - a Nürburg 460 Pullman limousine. Over the following decades Mercedes-Benz regularly provided the Vatican with automobiles which had been specially converted for the use of the Holy Father.
Today the Pope has several Mercedes-Benz cars at his disposal. In addition to the new G 500 Cabriolet, the fleet currently includes M and S-Class models with special protection.

So why does such a good and holy man need such protection?,
surely he should be only too ready to meet his maker?

Looks better than the old Popemobile G, he needs the protection so he doesn't end up as Pope on a Rope :P
Did you know he was a member of Hitler's youth movement. Think thats why he wanted a G.
That looks a good conversion, would be good for laning.. where me angle grinder....
Do you think he treats it like he stole it :P
Do you think he treats it like he stole it :P
Most Catholic church assets were somebodys at some point so probably yes
Is that a fishing chair in the back?

Fair point sorry didn't mean to offend
Who said the protection is for him? a rooftop sniper would get him every time, that is protection for the G some of those bolt on extras are getting quite desirable now :D
so, a chair for the fisherman
I did'nt know the Saudis used their "G"'s for fishing
PS
Jesus
I ( a pretty lapsed Presbyterian ) was quite genuinely moved by the Easter procession(s) in Spain, where they carry the various relics etc.
All impeccably turned out, children & adults in proper coats, no drinking or drunkenness, no litter.
A pleasant wee change from our Twelth or indeed most St Patricks day parades.
PPS
Now what was that mound of charcoal and bones they unearthed in Madrid recently?

I thought it was to get his hair cut on the move? - Would look good in a darker colour - nice to see he shares the same taste in engine size - I now feel closer to the maker! :D
Dig the comments on his past, I wonder if he enquired if they could do a G4 for him??
Finally should we send him a flyer to join the club - would be good at the AGM's ( maybe he could host a G Wagen meet at the vatican - great venue) and I would like to see some of his posts!

BTW 3 years at Stoneyhurst (jesuit's) and 5 years at Ratcliffe-Rosminians- Two orders of the catholic faith (and I lived to tell the tale  ) and I met the last Pope, who was a really cool guy.
Well yes I could Jesus,
Seems the Inquisition preferred to burn their mostly Protestant "heritics" at the stake, and the archologists have recently unearthed the evidence.
Please, the threads about the new G Popemoblie, nothing else.
:?
Max, where is the off topic button?
Max, where is the off topic button?
Will lock the thread if it continues off topic
"less is more"
if its not about G ,less talking is better than topics "non-related" :!:
why has everyone become so evangelical?
Anyone want to make a replica ?
We have a rolled 463 here with damage to roof and screen surround.
Would be ideal with cut down doors and folding screen.
Oh Err
Too much time spent on Benzworld "off topic" recently :?
I shall consider my wrists slapped and refrain
But, you know I was only answering Jesus's question,
In the case of my second "offence" anyway
But you see my "G" Wagens are so boringly reliable.
PPS
I wont go there
Cheers
Marcus

thats what i meant to post, it looks like a g popemobile, is that the original one?
sorry morty, it was showing up for me!
Is that still the same driver
hes made of lego bricks by the look of him!
Nah, the one in the passenger seat is a refugee from the Matrix, and the driver looks a wee bit like Michael Jackson...
I hope the boxy thing was air conditioned - looks like you could raise your tomato plants in it otherwise.
Are those Maybach wheels on the ML..hmm
they do look like them maybe?!
Maybe to take all the extra weight, would be amusing if ML wheels fit a Maybach
Decided that his Holiness and some of the bodyguards needed cheering up:

If your EPC shows You also the outside datacard notes, there is some interesting reading.
lots of interesting references to herr and herrns, snow white maybach nappa leather, red carpets, steps..hmm
Funny you say that, 'cause it's already got the military LWB convertible folding windscreen bodywork (code 10), fitted to the G500 chassis and drivetrain... if only that bodywork was commercially offeres I am sure it would make a good setup for offroading...
