Re: Should I buy this 406 Unimog

Hi Marcus the Unimog you are thinking of buying has been specially built for military logistics use. ordnance handling.fuel cell handling and as such will not compare to a civilian built machine..of course all is removable but then you have to get the proper bits. probably got air assisted brakes as well. and the basic 6 fwd 2 rvse G box you would need to have a visual appraisal to find out.....

Re: Should I buy this 406 Unimog

I may yet go over, but am currently in the process of maybe buying an MB Trac locally,
Senior managment may have a wobbly if I purchase both, but hey they are German and so is she ( well 1/2 )
MB Trac is a 1000 model, engine and gearbox apperar to be good but boy is the rest rough. Front linkage and PTO though
But then if I am playing in the woods ? what does rough matter
Brakes would be nice though

BOTH brothers think I am lacking a little common sense in this matter
PS
Peter
Any idea if the Mog has a winch, would it be mid mounted ?
Are those roller fairleads on the front ?
They will not give out ANY furthur information either over the phone or by Fax, they do not wish to be accused of misleading potential vendors

Hi Marcus they will not tell you because they don't know.its just another bit of plant they have been tasked to sell...you would need to visit and have an awareness of what you are looking at.....probably all in German so take the wife.it could be so far away from the original 406 Mog than to be practical.lilke the ones that came up last year in the NI auctions... totally B..st..dized and there are more of the same in the pipeline.....

Re: Should I buy this 406 Unimog

Hi Marcus looks very much like a snow blade mount on the front ..the crane would be for lifting the large concrete blocks used for traction ballast.lots of low gear work and heavy on the suspension would be where the wear will be...probably only 6 gears and a hydraulic pump off the pto for the crane and blade slew........

Re: Should I buy this 406 Unimog

Seems to be a lot of oil on the floor Marcus. If it is only been parked there for ten minutes, I'd be worried. If it's been there for weeks, well........ who knows. It may have been used as an aircraft tractor/tug. The RAF used Unimogs with Harrier "jump-jets" to drag the beasts in and out of hides when operating in the field. If it's from Withams, you'll be paying a fancy price for it. ;)

Re: Should I buy this 406 Unimog

Well
Ahmmm
I bought that local MB Trac
I will repent at my leisure
Thank you Peter and Mike? ( Quercus ) I am really terrible with names.
Well actuallyI still remember the name of a certain young lady from a magazine years ago, but we wont go THERE.
But back to Unimogs
Yes I have got the impression that not much is cheap from Withams.
And I got a busy week coming up
And yes I had spied the puddles of oil , almost certainly from the Mog
But where does one get a diesel Mog that has NOT been "modified"
worked to it drops or otherwise knackered
I dont wish to buy any more bother ( refer to the beginning of this post ) than I may already have.
And I might buy from Germany but they seem to be as dear and as rough over there, having perused autoscout and mobile and Mascus and ? kept an eye on two or three dealers sites
