Re: G500 Classic Advice

Just though I would keep you posted on the latest.
Arrived back home Saturday evening with the Classic after a great drive fron Pforzheim I'm really pleased with it. Even better than I expected :D :D :D
Everything went as planned. The Kids thought it was great. They couldn't wait to get to the next toll booth, when they would wind their windows down and ask me to "gun it again Dad". The sound as it bounced off the concrete dividers made the hairs on your neck stand up.
Had one minor glitch that I think may have been my own fault. The drivers door wouldn't close, on of all places, the tunnel shuttle. Managed to close it eventually and it got us home safely. I think it's the spring inside the U shaped door latch that has broken. New one on order.
I'll post some pics. shortly. It's currently washed and tucked away until the parts and paperwork turn up for registration. Discovered when I washed it just how well it had been looked after. It has had Swissol polish all it's life. Didn't know much about this untill I looked it up online. See the prices
Swissol
All in all, a great experience buying from Germany, and one I would recommend to anyone contemplating a G purchase. (LHD in this country really isn't a problem from what I can see)
All the best
David

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Yup congrats. Glad you had a good trip back.

Guess the Swissol will now go to waste with all the off-roading? Just don't lend it to Mark.

Hope to see you around with it soon.

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Good stuff the swissol 8)

I use it on my 1973 Porsche which gets pampered & washed with a soft wash mitt & dried with cotton towels & lives in a carcoon .... My G gets washed with a mucky sponge & a brush & never polished ( my paint is not good enough) Its like one extreme to another

The G500 sounds fantastic .. what was the fuel economy on that long run home?

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Thanks again lads for your support.
Fuel consumption over about 1500 Km was 17.5 L/100km although as you can probably tell, economy wasn't at the top of my list for this run. Auxillary tank was great. Seeing the needle rise at the flick of a switch was a first, especially in a G. Slow to fill though and worse to pay for but it did give about 1100Km range.
Don't have many pics of the journey I'm afraid Hus55, only a couple when we set off. We had a tight schedule and it was dark for a good part of it. I intend taking a few these next few days.
Been talking to a helpful guy at Swissol. they have their UK HQ at Knaresborough N.Yorks and have recently opened a detailing centre there. You probably know of them hot66, they are Porsche dealers too. Might have a trip across there when it's registered.
BTW I tried Avis again in Stuttgart for the RS4. Must have been my lucky day the last time, they wanted 450 euros for one day this time around. :(
Regards
David

Is the aux tank addition extra put onto your 500? Have read through the owners manual and can't find anything, except for the reserve tank, when the little orange light goes on, on the petrol gauge. FYI since the last service 1300 miles ago, I am getting 14.9 mpg – however the other day I managed 19.3! (weyhay!)

That'll be Andrew Mearns , Gmundcars at Knaresborough.

I know him. He has some good cars & some which have 'history'

Re: G500 Classic Advice

Auxillary tank is an extra 95 Ltr. tank fitted between the chassis rails underneath. I have had a brief look at it by peering under there but I want a proper look myself when it's on the ramp. I'll take some pics of that too. It seems to be a professional installation though. Wouldn't be too surprised if it was ORC. I'll find out, I did mean to ask. It fills from main filler pipe through a flattened tube that runs forward inside the O/S rear wheel arch. Only starts to fill when main tank is full(very slowly) There is a lighted switch on the centre console which has it pumping back into the main tank constantly or it can be left off to preserve it's contents until needed. Light extinguishes when it's empty.
Hot66, yeah thats the fellow. When you say "history" do you mean pedigree or "history   "

some cars are better than others ;)

Don't take that the wrong way though, some cars are genuinly good especially the 911R @ £650000 !

Re: G500 Classic Advice

i had to double check that £650,000 wow! thats mega, especially to have in stock. you could buy you and 5 friends gt3rs' for that and have some real fun!!!

like the idea of the bigger tank david, it makes sense really, i know you get the same mpg but the worst thing about low mpg cars is constantly filling the dam things up. wonder if they still do it for new ones?

Re: G500 Classic Advice

the 911R is for sale on behalf of its owner & not owned by the garage.

It is a very special piece of Porsche history and only a handfull exist, the 911R's being the 1st proper lightweight 911's & paved the way for the 911 TR, 911ST's and the iconic 911RS & RSR 8) . It is a LOT of money though.
