I've just been given some checker plate. I remember someone talking about putting this on their G, but cannot find the section.
1.Has anyone done their doors/wing tops etc?
2.Best way of cutting plate?
3.Fitting glue + Rivets(steel or ali?) or just glue?

Cheers Grendle :D

Re: Checker Plate

1. Plenty of door bottoms done by folks :-( .. I'm afraid I see it a cover up for sins underneath
2. Turn it over and cut with a jigsaw from the smooth side, first protect the "pretty side" to stop too many large scratches.
3. Fixing Tiger seal .. or mine were done with clear silicon sealant (not me.. rear step on bumper and now removed part over the rear lights)

Re: Checker Plate

the best tool for cutting ali is one of those evolution circular saws.

Re: Checker Plate

:D Hi Grendle
i personally wouldnt put it on unless my G was very rough
and you are doing a lot of walking on the wings and bonnet
i have seen it done nicely on door panels with them cut exactly as the org door panel, but again only if you couldnt get maching trim or it is been used for rough work or offroading
Just my own taste but, i try to keep them as original as possible
when i can

Re: Checker Plate

Hi all,

I agree with all comments above - far to often used to disguise rust beneath.

However, I have just finished putting chequer along door bottoms (up to lower body line) - I cut it out very accurately to follow door and round hinges. Also ran a piece full length wheelarch to wheelarch along sills (again to lower door line) using rubber body moulding to hold in place I think this looks excellent.

In general to avoid rust I would say sticking on is best but there are some curves that would be tricky to bend and therefore give tigerseal etc a hard time. I have used the odd pop rivet where required and then protected with waxoyl etc.

Andy

Thanks for the replies. I note the covering up of sins! My G's not too bad. I think I'll look at the rear door first...nice n flat!

Re: Checker Plate

Sorry Andy! The G looks great the plate works a treat. I don't need a template as my plate has been cut to size and just needs the edges smoothing off, but thanks for the offer.

Thanks Grendle
