I thought it was worth sharing my gearbox rattle with you all.

Symptoms: Gearbox rattle at idle with the clutch up. Disappears when clutch is depressed. Seems this is a common problem.
Solution: Removed gearbox. Had it pulled apart (not easy) by a good man in Southampton. Nothing wrong, so re-assembled. Replaced clutch (looked OK though). Replaced thrust and nose bearings (both also seemed OK). Checked flywheel (solid, all OK). Re-assembled everything, rattle still there.

Have concluded it's just "character" and nothing's about to fail. Just hope I'm right. :?

I also replaced the rubber mount at the back of the gearbox - this took away a mid-range vibration I'd had, so at least something is a bit better.

Next problem to solve is a non-functioning blower motor .... this could be worse than dropping the box. :(

Re: Gearbox Rattle

Hi the thrust bearing carrier can rattle on the actuating shaft/spigot shaft.... if you press the clutch pedal just enough to put pressure on the carrier (not to the floor) the rattle should disappear.proving that the problem is carrier related .... not much help now you have it all back together.....

Re: Gearbox Rattle

Have a trawl around the Pointed three forum I think this has been discussed on there. Seems to be a common problem.

I've been told by a classic car guy that getrag gearboxes of your vintage are known for the case hardening to wear allowing backlash between the teeth. No cure apart from an exchange box or rebuild but it will carry on like that without actually failing. I can't personally verify that though.
