Anyone one up on the latest with this? I did a bit of research last night and it seem there is little problem with pre 2001 G's. These will be £180. Is there any threat or pressure to significantly increase the Duty on pre 2001 cars in the future?
As far as I can see the penalties are being placed on new/newish cars.

Re: 4X4 Tax

They would need a handle on the DVLA registration document .. so far they have just used emissions in g/km to band new vehicles which they cannot retrospectively apply. I guess there is a engine capacity, derv/petrol and age they could use but apart from that they are all PLG..

So it is emissions they are loaded up on with newer cars .. a Rolls Royce or any other 2t plus vehicle is going to get hit .. not right to say it is a 4x4 tax.

Not sure how Mr Ken and co would track a 4x4 compared to a Luxobarge.. or a large people carrier .. all big heavy thirsty vehicles that are inappropriate for one driver in an urban environment (IMHO).

And what is average age of vehicle fleet .. say 6-7 years is mid point .. so already over half vehicles are already emission banded from 2001 .. no need to move the legislation as within 5 years 95% of cars will be covered. But they were considering an age ban for city centres (clean air act is forcing that consideration on councils in Scotland.. not DVLA) as one bad old car produces 100 or more car emissions in terms on CO, hydrocarbons etc.. but again very small numbers make it worthless. HGVs are far more of a problem..

So for time being it will stay as it has been .. one day old cars will become useful just to get past regulation (GPS based tracking/charging will get here  ..).. or they have already in my other car.. pre 95 Jap import avoids worst of emission tests.

Re: 4X4 Tax

Thanks for that you put a lot of thought into it, and yes I can see its not just a 4x4 Tax. Your point about the number of cars is well made, its not worth their while pursuing a few old cars..not enought stealth tax...sorry I meant Green Tax revenue to be worth the effort. Where as the increase in Duty does hit us hard if you're not running on ASDA's best Veg Oil.
I followed my G the other day when my wife was driving it.....no smoke at all unlike the numerous taxis(empty or with one passenger in!) which were gushing black fumes even at tick over, and they get their own lanes in which to spread the pollution quickly and evenly round the City!!!
