My G wagen ( 1991 300GES ) is due its 1st service under my ownership.

Apart from the oil change / fluid changes are there any specific areas I need to pay attention to?

What are the annual checks / maintanence for the front hubs for example ?

Due to time constraints I'll probo be getting my local garage to do the work & they don't specialise in G's , so any pointers will be useful

Re: Service time

Hi If you have no recent service records as to what was donein the past and in order to get your G' onto a level playing field... drain and flush all fluids ie engine oil. G'box oil. transfer box oil. and power steering. fit new filters throughout.drain and renew diff oils. drain and flush brake and difflock hydraulic oil.grease all prop shaft nipples. front axle swivels.and smear the ball with petroleum jelly. radiator flush and fill with new deicer fluid and use Water Wetter as the additive.change all fuel filters..screen washer pumps and jets gunge up and should be purged and jets cleaned.all wiper blades and door hinges treated with WD 40.sunshine roof channel cleaned and lubricated.door post switches cleaned and lubricated.diff lock rams to be cleaned and smeared with petroleum jelly.rear door check strap cleaned and roller lightly greased.underside of body and chassis Steam cleaned and waxoiled..check the drains in the base of the centre body uprights and pump with waxoil.waxoil rear door sheck strap channel along length of the door base. bonnet catch cable can be serviced by removing latch cross member and drawing the inner cable out from under the dash then clean any rust of the piano wire and smear with grease insert in outer sheath and exercise until free movement the re assemble...................well you did ask !!! and at the end of all this you know that these items will not suffer from lack of maintenence.

Re: Service time

Hi One thing I forgot ...remove the windscreen wiper arms and the black boss covers... switch wipermotor to fast wipe and drizzle wd 40 to the base of the revolving part then follow with hypoid 90 or a thick oil repeat two or three times over 10 minutes per spindle ensure base nuts are tight and seal underneath nut is in place. pack black boss cover with GP grease and push over the base nut...remove surplus grease.....set wipers to park and replace so that the parked wiper blade is 1.5cm above the rubber windscreen surround...repeat this process at least yearly or less if you use windscreen washer additive....its easier than changing the spindles !!

Re: Service time

Hi steam clean or pressure wash the swivels and surrounding housings....they should be hard chrome balls..jack up front of G' and at full lock smear the exposed ball area with petroleum jelly (vaseline) and turn lock to opposite side and repeat ...cycle lock to lock 10 times and apply more vaseline and repeat the 10 lock to lock cycle...remove surplus vaseline.remove allan key type plug from the rear of the housing and use pump grease gun filled with general purpose grease.fill the cavity and replace bung and do the same the other side...the reason for the vaseline is to clean the seal in the housing around the ball and to re seat the seal.if the balls are badly scored you will observe that the seal does not wipe the scored area and the grease leaks out...untidy but not serious. while you are at the front wheels check for bearing wear by gripping the tyre at 6 and and 12 o'clock push and pull to check for rock..there is bearing wear if there is any movement at all.....................

Re: Service time

Hi All,

Just wondered;

If my MB ASSYST said yesterday I had 4400 Miles before my next service and to day it now says B service in 30 days, which should I do? And any advice on what to expect for a B service on a G?

Re: Service time

My limited knowledge is that the display indicates distance to next service until the last 30 days then it indicates days remaining. It makes an assumption on distance per day. There is also a time limit between services which takes prescidence over distance I believe 2y is max between services. As your G has covered little mileage recently, the time has probably arrived for a service.
