So I take it that at temperatoues above 10 degrees C ( guessing there) just fill the tank ( with straight veg oil ) and drive away, bearing in mind fuel filter changing.
No worries whatsoever with the old in line injection pump
And I presume the 1998 Bosch rotary high pressure pump as fitted to the 290 is OK as well
What injection pump is fitted to diesel 463's?
I cannot be arsed fitting ( where ? ) a second tank for "twin tank" operation, so basically blend in a bit more mineral diesel for below 10 degree weather, I was looking at Ebay, electric gizmo using a glow plug to heat veg oil, but need to start up on mineral ( or run a blend ), or the wife will be well pissed on the first frosty morning. Ditto for heating veg oil with the coolant system.
So I think what I am thinking is that any auxilarry heating of the alternative fuel only makes sense if running a two tank system, closing down and starting up on mineral diesel.
However what about an Eberspacher heater, running off a wee tank of rebated fuel  could one plumb this in to effect heating of the veg oil, though I suppose if the engine was warm no need to specifically heat oil?
Cos the Galaxy got an auxilarry Eberspacher type heater, which I dont know ever has actually fired up, as it was only for low / extremely low ambient temps.
I will now gibber to the wife for a while
PS
What F-----R arranged the location of the water pump in the dear old Galaxy
Wot I was changing today because the mechanic didnt ( despite being instructed to do so)
He fitted a timing belt though, which she did not need for another 6000

You can also get an inline heater to use a single tank.

What is an Eberspacher heater? Is that like a Webasto? I was debating whether a webasto could be hooked up to a seperate tank to preheat the engine - but to be honest it is a little slow....

Aye,
Yes an Eberspacher = Webasto type heater
but is Eberspacher not German and Webasto American ?
Anyway am I being "dreagh"
As how can an in-line heater be any use to a single tank system as the veg oil downstream of the heater, ie in the lines, filter, injection pump etc cannot be heated by same.
And if a cold engine can or will start on unheated oil why bother heating it to run in a warm engine :?:
And could one not simply wrap a coil of copper tubing in or around the exhaust or exhaust manifold and run the incoming fuel through this ?
Is heating the oil necessary primarily to get it through the fuel filter, like will the injection pump heat it enough by pumping it to warm it sufficiently for the engine to start.
Surely the ideal would be an electrically heated (and thermostatically switched ) fuel filter supplemented by hot water when the engine warmed up
Regarding heating up times I was allowing that if one had it on a timer for weekaday mornings & evenings for the daily commute, the engine would either not be stone cold between times or timings would not be as critical.
PS
Volvo were apparently experimenting/trialling a vaccum flask system to store the hot coolant ( from a running engine ) and dump it back in when starting up later when otherwise cold.
Sounds like another complication to frustrate DIY mechanics

PPS
The 40 year old Deutz engine ( which happens to be on a combine )
has the fuel filter mounted directly above the engine oil filter, same compact housing mounts both and I guess this was/is to heat the fuel filter, as this same air cooled engine was, I understand, widely used industrailly
PPPS
I will now actually do some research

Jeez,
There are some hippies out there!
Anyway first stop seems to be a scrapyard for a coolant heated fuel filter as were fitted to Peugot diesels ?, then there seems to be quite a few electric heaters out there but also quite some doubts as to their effigy.
Then some Racor setups which, when cold, recirculate the surplus fuel ( they are designed for mineral diesel running in extreme low temps though ) from the injection pump straight back into the fuel filter, only switching it back to the tank when warmed up.
But I did note concerns about overheated fuel ( like perhaps from the exhaust  ) causing the internal construction of propriarity fuel filters to break down.
So bugger it 80%/75% rape seed // 20%/ 25% FSD and no mods.
And like some of those aforesaid mentioned hippies
if I went and done some work
I could afford to buy real diesel.
Cheers
