Well we managed to survive this years Tay Forest challenge , formerly the Argyll FC . Myself and team mate David Johnston set out on Friday for Pitlochry with winch bitches Ian mcLue and Robert McCubbin after some minor fettling of the old trucks to compete in one of the UKs toughest winch challenge events, the event itself has always been a great social event and this year was no exception , only this year I cut back my excessive alcohol intake on the Friday night cause on Saturday morning last year I wasn't worth tuppence and was rather unsociable wanting only to curl up in the service van and die - this new venue proved very popular with a lot more driving , good long sections and some real stings in the tail for good measure , some sections had names like - The Grand National , a route strewn with fallen trees , and one section ( 22 ) not sure if it had a name but imagine getting to 2 large fallen trees across the path , not parrallel but about 100" apart and 4 1/2 ft in the air , have a look at the pics and you will get the general idea of the kind of tasks that are set for us by the organisers . Absolutely great fun . Breakages ... there wasn't any that caused any real problems , a brancked kicked up and knocked my shift levers out of the 4 speed box leaving only 1st gear and I think we found every stump with our track and drag links - easy fixed , will need to do something similar to Tonys over axle bar setup - in all i was really pleased by the way the G's performed for us dispite having the smallest tyres and basically standard everything else , just shows you can compete in top level events and get a good finish - we finished 11th overall out of 24 crews - can't wait for next year

looks like fun, how did you get on with that winch, in the challenge south west club you struggle with the speed of anything less than a 8274 or a fast hydraulic winch

Re: Tay Forest Challenge 2007

Yip ... they are a bit slow but we cant afford fancy hydraulic setups , these Come Ups have been 100% reliable since fitting them 4 years ago , we run the same winches front and rear and run Allbright contactors so if one was to fail we can quickly swap from end to end or vehicle to vehicle , more regularly we snatch block or double line them to help take the strain off on long pulls , check out last years Argyll photos ( Another lane from Hell ) and you will see the kind of abuse they can take , we do have plans to change to faster winches but not neccessarilly 8274's - exact type still to be decided - bigger tyres would be a bigger advantage right now and more sliding by trees proctection etc . We are doing these events mainly for fun but we always like to get a good finish none the less.
