Since 4 star fuel was banned and I got rid of my 280E I have been a diesel fan. I have never understood what the different types of petrol were and their octain ratings.
The unleaded fuel is all called premium (like everything today) and is called 95. Then there is the more expensive types rated at 98.
So if the handbook says to use premium 95 rather than the regular 91 which one should be used? Which vehicles need the 98?

98 octane is used by the ultra mordern engines, high performance types, turbos and the like. If your fuel sticker does not ask for it do not waste your money using it in your car, the performance will not improove unless the engine is tuned for it.

Re: Octain rating

I was driving in Germany on my holidays and used 100+ Racing Petrol which gives more power and many more miles out of a tank. They sell 91, 95,98 and 100+ Can't think what vehicles would be on an autobahn that could use 91 Octane??? maybe a ride on lawnmower?? 95 is minimum requirement for all G Wagens and any car really. (I use 95 in the G but 100+ definately perked up the AMG V8  )

Re: Octain rating

I am sure there is a Lada or two out there yet,
one could adjust for octane rating at the distributor without tools
if I recall there was a wee quadrant that was marked off with said ratings
Or am I getting really really old
Cheers

Thats right Marcus, you can adjust mercs with the EZL timing thing under the bonnet but this is for places where you can only get the crap petrol like Albania or East Anglia. I thought Germany would be the last place you would find 91 Octane Paraffin straight out of the pumps :D

I dont think that I would be wanting to put 91 Ron paraffin in a Tilly lamp though, that would be more for an RMP type.
