Well looks like a lot of sand on the dash... and as you drove it pretty much means North Africa...

OK a few more pic's.

Brilliant trip (some better in retrospect than when you were actually doing it if that makes sense.

Confirmed that LR’s are just too fragile though :D

It worked great for us, but then we were a little “special”. Six of us in one vehicle meant that a roof rack would have been a difficult proposition.

Given the choice, and if there was just the two of us, I would go for a roof tent and dump the rear seats for the trip.

Also, due to the number of people, a normal fridge freezer was not an option. So we went for a coleman extreme cool box. Claimed to keep ice frozen with an external temp of 90 degrees for 6 days. We bought frozen water when ever we could and it worked just great. Even better when you talk to others on the trip who had spent up to £1,000 on engel fridge freezers and solar panels and which couldn’t cope with the heat.

It wasn't all hardship though, some days were spent lazing by the pool with a cool beer:D

Re: Guess Where I've Been

Looks like a good trip. What issues did the LRs have?

Interesting comment you made on the fridge. Any idea what temp the Engels were managing to get?

And why do you have 460 lamp guards on - and swapped left to right on top of it?

Grudging appreciation would be the best description

Not sure what temp they were managing but it was only on the really extreme days that they failed to function properly. Having said that they were only catering for 2 people. Bear in mind we got through 7 litres of water / person / day so nothing this side of a commercial freezer would have cooled water quick enough!!

The interesting thing is that most of the failures afflicted the modified vehicles. The unmolested newish Defender’s coped perfectly, as you would expect, it wasn’t anything extreme apart from the distances and temperatures. Generally overheating (some long climbs to about 9000ft), fuel leaks, alternators, starter motors etc.
The Disco II had numerous electronic glitches, failed injector harness’s he went through 3 brand new ones and then had to resort to carrying out temporary repairs on the failed ones, engine management shutting down, numerous warning lights appearing etc. Failed air spring. Having said all that the few issues were all sorted and just added to the adventure and camaraderie.

Re. the light guards..................it wasn't me :D

I hadn't even noticed, they will be swopped tonight :D

Re: Guess Where I've Been

That was temp at dash sensor I bet ... black/very dark vehicle in hot sun = very hot car... and cool engine at start up relatively... still not too nice.

Hottest I ever really saw was 48C in Dubai out in middle of desert up some boulder track (well actually probably Abu Dhabi ... map+countries get messy in UAE) but parked up car would show more. Should have taken a photo.. rock climbing in a Golf is fine if it is not your Golf! (4wd Vr6) but at the time survival by staying out of that sun seemed more important. Saudi and Qatar had 50C days but not much more.

I believe the sensor is mounted under the front bumper. So although it is in the shade (and has nothing to do with interior temp of car or colour) it does get skewed by radiated heat from the ground and engine. That was the peak I saw. Whilst driving which given the above would be a very accurate reading it was around 49 to 52. Still pretty warm. That was only occasionally though the rest of the trip was around the mid 30's. Just nice :D :D

The engine temp was not at start up, it had been running for around 2-3 hrs. It rarely went over 90. Just as a precaution I used pure water and Water Wetter but given the way it behaved that may well have been unnecessary. Indeed if you look at the water ways in this engine they are huge which must be a good thing.
Also more by luck than design as part of the prep work I had the rad re cored. Allegedly recored rads perform better than original spec. Merc due to them having larger fins allowing increased water flow.

Re: Guess Where I've Been

Well the pictures blow my theory for the temperature question. Thought you had it in a spraybooth oven or something.

Pics look great, keep them coming.

You did say six in the G for the hols all the time?

Regards,

Mike
