hey thanks again for those who helped in identifying my clutch a few months back i got a new one fitted,
however i now have another clutch related problem. shortly after the new clutch was fitted occassionally at around 65-70mph the clutch appeared to slip?
i asked my mechanic he dismissed it as it only happened occassionally and he couldnt get it to do it,recently i had to reverse a trailer on which the cutout for the brakes didnt work this gave a mild burnt clutch smell(iv smelled alot worse) now once my g is warmed up the clutch starts slipping if there is any strain but only at high speed ?! does this mean my clutch is gone again? its not slipping in low gears at low speeds?

hope someone has an answer
if its any help vin is wdb 460 33227037894

Re: clutch slip?

Sounds like it,
I am a bit of an anorak about proper clutch use -- rather than the fairly usual abuse -- to my mind it is bad news/abuse if one smells a clutch at all.
And yes if the clutch is failing it will first be noticable in the higher gears at higher speeds, less mechanical advantage/clutch having to work harder
I.e.
One should select a suitably low gear and keep ones foot on the floor not on the clutch, the accelerator pedal is the one for modulating speed.
There may be some underlying mechanical cause however.
I "understand" that "G"Wagen clutches are pretty tough/ not prone to trouble though, well at least not in a 88HP 300GD
Not much help I appreciate,
Fingers crossed
Marcus

Re: clutch slip?

Hi did you change the pressure plate friction plate and thrust bearing ? and how much pedal travel is there before the clutch disengages?

Re: clutch slip?

Sounds like clucth investigation to answer your question.
Any thing else is conjecture. What was the condition of the flywheel face?

Re: clutch slip?

2 questions/suggestions to check.

When releasing the clutch with the clutch pedal where does the clutch grab at the top, middle or bottom of the foot travel? If it is not in the proper position you can wear a clutch out in a hurry due to constant pressure.

Is it possible, during the install the mechanic got some grease/oil on the clutch disc? Along those lines could the front seal on the transmission be leaking and the oil saturated the disc?

Just a thought.

Re: clutch slip?

Hi was the replacement clutch a G'wagon one? (the one for the 300d car is a lot lighter and the friction plate is a different diameter.) it is not usual for clutch slip unless under load....accelerating.... if your hitting 70-75 mph the engine will be revving at around 2800/3000 rpm...watch the rev counter for higher revs when you think it is slipping..it could be fuel starvation from clogged fuel filters. this would give you a "Flat" sensation under the accelerator pedal...
