Re the 290 van, if I am for keeping as my daily driver, is it worth disconnecting the viscous fan and fitting an electric one, currently getting 24.?? mpg tank in tank out. Is it worth the hassle, btw a recon rad was fitted recently. The van is rarely working hard so I guess the fan is not needed most of the time.
Cheers
Marcus

Re: electric fan -- likley fuel savings >?

you going to need a single 16" or twin 12". £130 to £150 plus fitting, @ 24mpg its costing you £0.18 a mile, @ 26mpg its costing you £0.17 per mile based on £4.50 a gallon. so the difference is £0.10p. so you need to do 1500 to get you money back before you see the saving, after that for every 1500 miles you save £150.

Is it worth it ?

Thanks Ian,
You trying to confuse me with £150/1500 miles thing
Would that be the same as 10p/mile, £100/1000miles then
Anyway
You reckon about 2mpg saving
Since I am running on FSD = Free State Diesel,
at about 75 or 80p but 8 or 10,000/annum
=£640 to £800 /year
Its probably worth it

Cheers
Marcus

Been looking at the Pacet info on Deamon Teewks site
I presume it is simpler to fit a pusher fan to the outside of the rad, what odds 2 by 12" vis-a-vis one 16" fan ?
I will look at fitting possibilities this evening,
I may need to pull the rad anyway as it seems to be weeping where the fitting for the auto trans cooling pipe is mounted, it may never have been right from its fairly recent fitment, or the firm that rebuilt the transmission may have done something to upset it

Does your van have Aircon ?. The thing with pacet is there fans are reversable so if you haven't got room when you get it you can fit it inside and turn the blade round. Why not ring Pacet direct, there very helpful.

Rebuilt the transmission, what happend there then.

Nope never have run on red, despite a 300 gallon tank in the shed for the tractor, you can dip the BX parked in the back field, best of clear.
On that one seems the word locally here is that the modern common rail and other high pressure injection systems will not tolerate red diesel as it is too such an old specification that relatively speaking it is full of shit, this was guninely causing numerous problems with the most recent range of J D tractors.
Plus a friend in the trade says that the Motobility scheme had so many warrenty claims ( due to dodgy diesel ) for diesel cars in N Ireland that they have made the diesels significently dearer to persuade applicants to go for petrol
No aircon but a radiator for the intercooler fitted outside the main rad, plus a loop of pipe ( which could be relocated ) to cool the power steering fluid.
Still more room outside than in though it appears that I will have to remove rad to remove existing engine mounted fan.
And may need to move grill slightly forward to clear fan.
Re Pacet, I looked on their website, could not find any useful info except links to their main suppliers, yes thanks, I will phone them, I, per Shakir, was looking at the profan range which are not reversible, have to be ordered to pull OR blow.
Re transmission --
Now thats a long storey, transmission was playing up ie getting very sluggish, I booked her into the local specialist who when I asked why an auto transmission would fail said thay just did -- I said -- but surley there must be some cause? etc etc -- but no they just fail, Renault from 30,000 miles on alledgedly.
Anyway transmission rebuilt, collected van, wife drove it home, I took it to the town and back = 7 miles fleeced her 3.5 miles back out the road and left a trail of fluid up the drive and a big puddle below once parked up.
I phoned the firm and suggested that they try again.
Guess what -- the reason for the transmission failing -- the garage that had fitted the recon radiator had twisted the flexible hose that feeds the transmission fluid to/through the radiator -- so as to strangle the flow -- ergo no cooling and a cooked transmission.
I presented said garage with the bill for £1600.00 for the rebuild and they put their hands up & paid up without a fuss.
And after all that -- how is family life treating you? -- novelty worn off yet?
We quit after two, though seems three or four are fashionable again!
Cheers

hi marcus
long time no hear
i had a similar problem with a 1992 300d back in 1995
i left the car with a guy down your direction (portstewart i think)
i think his name was mervyn witheroe (autobox specialist) total thief and ganster , loan car provided and automatic as promised
a 1980,s austin alegro/ maestro with two gears working in the box
1800 quid to refurb the box and left me with no gears
it started at 7 or 8 hundred and went to 1800
and at that time it was priced at 1500 to get an exchange gearbox fitted with the mercedes dealer
and not a penny back from the specialist
sorry for the moan
