Hello Gs,

Does anyone have any friends in Dubai that have a G?

It'd be great to speak to someone here (Dubai) about the G, or maybe start up an appreciation society right here...

Many thanks and have a nice day,
Raf

There are one or two here but I think they are mainly UK expats. As peter points out the majority are on the US forum.

Though those members are all for the most part G500/G55 owners so in regards to help you may get more here.

Sorry just saw this, let me know if you don't get my PM (Private Message).

Pity I'm leaving tomorrow back to the UK but should be back before the end of the year, so there can be some hands-on familiarisation with your acquistion!

And there certainly are a number of G-heads in the UAE. I was at the used car market recently and found at least 6 (www.usedcars.ae), most notable were a white SWB 463 needing some TLC, and an authentic 500GE from 1993 (centre and rear diffs only).
A few amusing photos...

A 460-turned 463, and how to make a G look small (esp. effective if you're trying to convince the missus it's not too big/high/etc)

Re: Any G heads in the UAE?

Hum.. I did see very rotten 230GE there at the second hand market in Dubai once, still about £5-7k !! but most are G500 463 with "nice" prices to suit (ie no bargain .. especially when they see a white face!)

(Dubai has about 5 different prices... Locals pricey unless they know someone, Euro/US trash is expensive, Indian is x3 the final price as they need a good bargain but unfortunately the Euro walks away at that starting price, apparently the Japanesse only buy if it is reassuringly expensive!.. never did find out how the Africans price but no doubt lots of bargaining so Indian/Pakistani sort of act). Presume the Japanesse second hand market is still going .. always a bit of a laugh but worrying amount of cars have no door lock from the premature release from their rightful owners in Japan  Around the side to that there was a Kazakstanian bloke who used to convert full sized/real Land Cruisers from RHD to LHD after welding them back together from 3 parts (roof, front, rear; cut that way to get 3 of them into a 20' container  ) Best place was Sharjah .. great breakers if you are into Jap stuff .. but then it gets very hard if you want anything else anywhere.. and the Blue Souk is the best world market for junk you can find! I left about 3 years ago after 2 years there.

The Al Maktoum's had a few 463 in black.. I think one of them was number plate 1 and the other something like 14 (you can tell connections from number plate watching..) .. only really saw them once after a 24 hour go kart race .. been up for 30 hours and we had to keep going for another 1.5 hours so royalty could come by and see .. nice to have the support .. just a pity it took 25 hours to get there

Ah yes I remember Sharjah Police had fun with those cut&shut/stolen Jap cars, now I think it has moved on to more northern Emirates.
Where is this Blue souq you speak of...in Shj Industrial Area?
Btw. I think the Dubai royals have shifted to white Gs (last time i checked, 2006), almost invariably with the number 1. The other numbers might be relatives..they are not a small family!

Pics were posted of this G in the last week or two with that plate.

In the UK he has a matching pair of Darley Blue G55Ks.

Re: Any G heads in the UAE?

You are right .. white cars .. no way would they be silly enough to have a black car in Dubai. (45C + black = one big oven .. A/C on my Silver Golf with black leather just never cooled down really .. dash used to get to 55-60C or so!)

Cut and shuts were for export.. done in Dubai  Very well done cosmetically.. I could only tell when they had finished because one mastic pad was missing under the front seat otherwise welds were all ground flush.

Blue Souk is in Sharjah ..also the new Souk (well 12 years or so!).. when you pass into Sharjah keep to the coast and after a shopping/exhibtion centre you went past all the goverment buildings .. finally you could see it on the landward side just before you hit the old Sharjah main drag (not the new one that you would have hit if you stayed on the main road). It has 2 long 2 storey buildings covered in blue tiles (very pretty) in arabic style with bridges between them, at 90 degrees to the road you are on .. you have to come down off the raised carraigeway and pass under it on a sort of elongated roadabout under the carriageway (normal UAE crash risks! :P ). Downstairs is normal stuff but upstairs has lots of stuff to keep the kids interested.. little cases with butterflies, scorpians (dead), brass horse and carts, theodolites, telescopes (Indian not too bad copies), lots of carpets (but carpet fair at Dubai airport during shopping week is best place for bigger carpets).. carved wood etc.. all ex India/Africa/Iran/Afganistan etc. Some would say rubbish/trash.. after the Euro regular stuff I found it fun! and lots of nephews got good presents from it (still living after them!). I still have a map of Sharjah I had to draw somewhere.. not maps really available so you had to make your own ..also a cheap Indian furniture place at the back of Sharjah if you have to pay for your own .. fraction of the Indonesian stuff but still ethnically functional. I spent a few Saturdays when everything was closed just driving around trying to find stuff ... regular days in Sharjah are way too congested.

Re: Any G heads in the UAE?

You got me nostalgic there, I lived in Sharjah for 11 years, and yes, now I remember the "new" blue souq, with the dome that was decorated with astrological signs or stars, history! As you say Sharjah has many attractions, if one can survive the traffic! What drove us out at the end was mainly the traffic. It also has the happy memories of the only time in our family's history that we owned 4 Gs at one time :D Space wasn't an issue back then. Let me know if you come down to the Midlands!
