Hello All,

My beloved 300 GD 1989 is giving me a headache. For the last few weeks it simply won't switch off on the key, it continues to run as if you have not taken the key out. The problem appeared to be progressive, for a day or two it switched off about 1-2 seconds after taking the key out, then after that short period it now won't switch off at all.

All I can do it stall it at the moment, but I am using it sparingly as I know this is very bad for the Engine.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the vacuum system. Do a search for "vacuum" and you should find a series of steps to check. But essentially make sure there are no leaks.

It might just be a sticky solenoid valve on the fuel injection pump, or - worse case scenario - if it is a high mileage, well worn engine - it could be consuming it's own oil, so carries on running even when the fuel is cut off. As the situation gets worse, you will eventually have a "runaway" engine on your hands. I must confess, however, that whilst this was relatively common on Land Rover 200TDi engines, I have never heard of it happening on a Mercedes diesel. That isn't to say that it can't or won't occur.
Q :?

The vacuum hose could have a hole in it.. happened on a TD .. it had blown the exhaust manifold gasket .. hot gases rise.. the hose to the brake servo snakes over the in/outlet manifolds.. hot gas burnt hole in pipe (this is 3/4" one in white/clear plastic) and the hole was bigger than the vacuum pump could overcome sometimes .. depended on the postion of the pipe. Brakes got harder as servo failed to boost brakes.

So check all vacuum lines including those not associated with the stop function.

My Mechanic has now had the car for 4 weeks and says that he has done the following -

1) Top Solenoid
2) Bottom Solenoid
3) Switch Vacuum
4) Vaccum Hose

and the Problem still persists, I think it is impossible for this to still be the case as the swtich works fine when off the the pump and the manual switch on the fuel pump works.

Hi The fuel shutoff lever on the pump is activated by the vacuum pump it is biased to the closed position ie engine stopped.if the lever on the pump remains in the open ie engine running position after the key is turned to switch the engine off them the vacuum bleed that activates the lever may be causing the problem.or the lever is partial siezed in its shaft housing..with the hood up and the engine running observe the position of the stop lever it should be open.when you turn the key to stop the engine does the lever move from the run position to the stop position if it does and the engine is still running the the stop mechanism has an internal leak allowing fuel to continue to flow to the pump and injectors..if this is the case the pump needs serviceing to rectify the problem
