Help!...I've paid my GWOA dues so feel free to chip in (waiting to be made official  )

I'm getting hydraulic fluid leaking from the bell housing drain hole (should there be a nut in this as it is threaded??). This must be from the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. Now looking at my original owner’s manual it shows a separate Fluid reservoir for the clutch. I don’t have one so it must be linked to the brake fluid reservoir, the Russek handbook seems to say this (not the clearest manual I've ever read!) is this correct?

Also I'm thinking this is a drop the gear box job? That is probably straight forward, but is the slave cylinder serviceable using a kit from MB? Bleeding looks pretty simple.

What's the best place/cost for a clutch plate as if I'm dropping the box I might as well do that at the same time.

Thanks in advance for advice/experience

Re: Hydraulic leak

Are you sure its hydraulic fluid? Don’t forget the gearbox uses atf which is pretty thin. Repair kit is available for around £20, but why bother just fit new. Can’t imagine it’s a box out job anyway

Re: Hydraulic leak

That could make sense as I don't appear to have lost brake fluid from the reservoir...I'm keeping an eye on that. ATF fluid that would be a big job.. gear box spline seal. Is there an easy way to tell the difference? I've seen pink ATF in the past.

Re: Hydraulic leak

Slave cylinder is on the outside of the gearbox beside your left foot on a RHD car. If it leaked I'm not sure it would go inside the gearbox. The reservoir should be behind the brake servo with a wee link hose to master cylinder .. it then goes over the bellhousing to a rubber hose .. and this then feeds over the bellhousing again to the slave (RHD converted LHD design! ). Certainly not a box out job to do slave reseal.

More likely oil seepage from gearbox/engine .. brake fluid is vegtable based so feels/smells very different.

Presuming we are on a manual here! :?

Re: Hydraulic leak

Yep 4spd manual! I'll do a smell check then. Though your Set up looks very different to mine. I take it yours is an 88 460? When I get home I'll post a pic.

Thanks

1988 300 GD SWB with 5 speed .. so I guess your slave maybe somewhere else but still doubt it needs the gearbox out to fix.

Never pays to look at things in the rain...I admit to being a plonker on this one! The Clutch master cylinder is mounted in the same place as yours, I was looking lower down the bulkhead and could not see it. My excuse is its hidden by the Airfilter and Brake servo. I can now see it shares the fluid reservoir with the brakes...this could be a DIY modification but looks pretty origional :? :?
You are correct I don't need to drop the box to look at the slave cylinder   , but you are probaly right about ATF fluid when/if it stops raining I'll give it a smell/taste test!!! If it ATF then I'm back facing a big job!
thanks
