I have in the last days notised that when my engine has reached it´s working temperature the typical "ticking" from the diesel engine intensifies.
If i roll down the windows i hear it clearly while driving..

Im not surpriced if you guys dont understand what I mean but if you do, is this something anyone have any ideas about?

Best regards /

Re: enigne sounds strange?

I can understand you description. I had a similar sound on my engine. It was the hydraulic elements. This is the piece between the cam and the valve. It is filled with oil from the engine lubrication system. As it gets old it doesn't fill with oil correctly and becomes loose. Thus the louder noise.

They cost about £12ea (12 required) from MB, but to replace them the cam needs to be removed which means removing the cam chain as well. So it is quite a job.
When I did mine the sound was much quieter and I'm sure that the power was better as the valve timing and lift was correct again.

Hi what is the oil pressure like when the engine is hot ?? and what grade of oil are you using and when was the oil and filter changed last?? try an oil and filter change ...if quieter.. add a "slick 50" treatment and then listen for the clatter..as a last resort is change the hydraulic tappets as Roly says rgds

Re: enigne sounds strange?

Thanks for replies guys!

2 weeks ago i bougth a can of diesel injectioncleaner a quite strong one. I mixed that with the diesel when refilling the tank 2 times. Im starting to think that after removing "dirt" from the injectors (valves? not sure of the english word for it) these have to be adjusted again. I think they were adjustet during the service session in january but then the injectors were dirty so maybe it has to be adjusted again?

The oilpressure, enginetemp and engine power is unchanged since the "chatter" started. = everything is normal. The oilfilter was also changed in january. Im running on 0w 40 Mobile 1 oil. the truck has been roling 5000km since then.

No smoke at all (like before). Do you mean i have to change the injectors? not just adjust them?

Re: enigne sounds strange?

Hi i njectors must be set up on a special testbench to make sure that they inject at the right pressure and that the spray pattern is correct.I do not believe that they can be "adjusted" in situ.if you relate to what you did to cause the rattle to develop then the use of a cleaning agent appears to be the main possibility resulting in the injectors becoming erratic. check the engine oil for diesel smell caused by the excess diesel being injected washing down the walls of the cylinders and contaminating the engine oil..

Re: enigne sounds strange?

I was talking with a diesel injection specialist a few days ago and he claimed that most diesel injector cleaners caused more problems than they fixed.

The only additive he recommended was one that replaced the lubrication properties of sulphur, the content of which has of course been drastically reduced over the past few years.

I bought some (OK I’m a sucker for snake oils!) and a slight “stutter” at around 1900rpm has disappeared :D :D

Re: enigne sounds strange?

Yes I had a bad feeling when i poure the bottle of cleaner into the tank (dont mess with something that workes perfectly!). But I feelt like I HAD to try it...
But while driving yesterday afternon and driving to work today (with windows down) :) I heard the chattering hade disappeared!!? Quite strange... but it sounds just like before i i had the cleaner bottle added.
I will keep my ears out of the windows for a while just to be sure.. :)

Thanks guys for all your help! Its like always priceless info

Have a good day

Re: enigne sounds strange?

I can still hear the chattering sometimes.. It seems to come and go.. The oil didn´t smell diesel. But maybe im going to change the filter and engine oil to start with.. hmm

that could be your problem. Follow the spec. in the hand book. In my experience older engines with hydralic tappets don't like thin syntheic oil

Re: enigne sounds strange?

I´ve been thinking the same about the oil.. Its a true winteroil. And now its summer.. maybe something to do with oil getting to thin.
Do you suggest to change to a 5w 40? or more?
I still want it to work well in the cold winter.. I will check what MB recomends in the instructions..

IMO can't go wrong with top quality 10W 40 semi synthetic.

Great for all seasons.

Re: enigne sounds strange?

I have now changed the engineoil and filter to Mobile 1 5w 40.
The old filter was really heavy filled with s**t because of the injetorcleaner.
The engine chatter still remains.
I had my mechanic looking at it yesterday and he claimed with no doubt its the tappets in the valves thats wourne out. After all that dirt removed its now wrong size. He ordered new ones and we are replacing them next month.
