Differential locks not locking

My request for guidance refers to a SWB G500 (09/04):
In normal use I do not have occasion to lock the differentials often enough so every about 2 weeks I engage and disengage the locks in a no strain straight line gravel situation - just to confirm & keep things working.
Yesterday, while I was moving very slowly, I tried to lock the centre differential and it immediately obliged. I then tried to lock the back differential Although the yellow light came on immediately, the lock never engaged (the red light remained off). I drove like this VERY SLOWLY for about 1km. No red light.
Of course no question about locking the front differential: only the yellow light was turned on.
Am I doing something wrong?
Any ideas?

Re: Differential locks not locking

Hi Lack of use and lots of dust..or mud...and heat can cause the system to malfuction..would suggest a thorough inspection and service of the system including on the diff housings and some repeated cycling of the difflocks will remedy the problem rgds

Re: Differential locks not locking

Thank you for your advice.
Should I continue activating the locking mechanisms every now and then in order to maintain operability of the system? How often?

HELP: THE SAGA GOES ON:
I went to a (large) local authorised MB service centre to check the system. By their own admission (actually quite honest) their expertise in G-wagons did not allow them to proceed beyond the immediately obvious and, in that sense, they could not find why the system malfunctions.
In repeating the lock/unlock cycles daily, I have found some marginal improvement but not enough to pacify. I do not know how immediate should the reaction to the lock-requests be: it take about a kilomeyer of slow straight line driving to actvate all 3 locks. On the other hand they disegage almost instantly after a request.
The centre lock consistently engages instantly; its the other two locks that bother with their unpredictability. Another point I am unclear about: can a lock request be accomplished if the car is not moving (stuck with wheels spinning) or with stationary non-rotating wheels with gear stick at N and engine running?

Re: Differential locks not locking

The Vehicle must be in motion, the wheels needto have a differential speed to engage the diff locks, driving in a straight line does not necessarily give you that right condition.

Turn the Steering wheel lock to lock slowly, whilst on the move, this should allow the diff locks to engage.
