Hi Folks

Unfortunately I got damaged thread in one of the holes on a front wheel hub - the damage is definitely in the hub as I have tried different bolts.
The questions I have are :

Has anyone had this problem and what did you do?
Is is worth re threading the hole and use a bigger bolt?
Is there any proven solution bar changing the hub?
Any idea of the cost of a hub for a 1984 230 ge?
How safe is it to drive around with 4 of the 5 whell bolts holding on the wheel?

Lots of questions - I know but I'd be grateful any advice

As yu have already touched upon that there are several alternatives to your predicament. It all depends upon what sources you can mustre.

I would favour using "Time Serts", but I do not know if a time sert of the wheel bolt dimensions are available. You will need to find locally if the sizes are available.

To explain what a time sert is. if you imagine a small metal sleeve which has threads on the outside of the sleeve and threads in the inner bore. The threads in the inner bore is identical to the pitch size and diameter of the wheel bolt, the outter thread is obviously, over sized. to install the time sert, an oversize hole is drilled or bored, then with a tap, a new thread is cut, the time sert is installed into the new cut with a special tool and when the job is complete, the time sert locks into place to accept your wheel bolt as per normal.

If I can find you a supplier in Ireland, I will let you know.

I do not know if a helicoil will do the same? Failing all this, you are looking at another drive shaft, I think.

Then there is the over sized bolt of course. It is a matter of finding out which.

im pretty sure the thread is a metric:

m14x1.5

Could try to re tap it would be the cheapest and easiet

take the bolt to engineers merchant and they will measure size and pitch

Hope thats some use

Hi I Can supply a serviceable "as removed from axle" hub if needed at cost of GBP 65 + shipping....if the threads are stripped in yours then you cannot re-tap because the hole is to large... thread insets as mentioned above and others like Helicoil tend to screw out with bolt next time you remove the wheel.use a liquid metal compound like Belzona or Loctite might do which will bond the insert to the hub rgds
