To the originator of this enquiry,

Sorry, I do not keep log calls or any communications. The enquirer phoned in.

RE: The reliabilty of the 350TD engine, initially reports as unreliable, due to engine failures and blow ups. This was due to head gasket failures.

Mercedes Benz gave a very neutral report on this subject, thier PR working in top gear. Effectively, they maintain that any second hand engine is dependant upon the maintenance and service adopted.

An Americian G-Wagen forum acknoweldged problems with the engine but expensive repairs could be done or those who had an engine rebuild maintained no problems.

But, the most informative responce was from the German G-Wagen club forum. The failures were the Head Gaskets blowing, leading to other serious damage. Mercedes Benz introduced a series of modifications to address the problem. They introduced a larger volume of flow of coolant pump, changed the antifreeze to T30 spec., a heavy duty Head Gasket and seals, modified Head.

Further more, the engine being a powerful turbocharged unit demands certain driver care and behaviour, that is building up the driving in relation to engine operating temperatures from cold and at the end of journeys particularlly long distance/high speed driving.

That means no sudden temperature increases or decreases, idling the engine to even the runing temperature before switching off. Although, no cost values were discussed, it has been indicated the these modifications and repairs were costly, some owners doing only a small measure of modifications before the drastic event as a preventitive measure.

The conculsion: if it has been modified, with preference a new modified head, give driver attention and check operating temperaturers whilst driving, it is a reliable engine, otherwise, any abuse would mean an unreliable one.

Re: G350TD Engine Reputation

I have a late 1993 350 TD. It had its engine replaced after 80 000km, (probobly blew up). I have read somewere that it was common for the 350 engine to "blow up" from 60 000 km - 90 000. MB hade many problems with it fitted also in the S-class living a hard life on autobahn. I think MB updated the engine in 1994?. My G was given a updated new engine which has now been running 140 000 km. Im really satisfied with it. I was told by previus owner to keep running it on Mobil 1 Oil 0W 40.
Is that the right oil to use? (quite cold here during the winter..)[i]

And here we thought you were asking on behalf of yourself....

Supposedly you can tell if it has the modified engine by a series of notches on the head gasket... but don't ask me how.

Hello Rollin,

Yes it sounds right. The oil you describe is a twin viscosity oil, '0W' signifys a thin viscosity oil with a Winter grading to it. This is this the thinest oil that can be got. The '40' signifys the more heavier element of oil, this part of the oil takes over from the 0W grading oil, from when the engine starts to warm up.

Being a Zero viscosity oil, suggests to me a fully sythectic oil.

If you want to be perdantic about the issue, you could go as far as fitting an engine heater to keep the engine warm in winter, over night or when the engine is not in use. Not only does the engine warm up quicker from start up, you can reduce the wear on engine during warm up, the shorter this period the beter.

Thanks Pistonhead!

Good info! Now its all clear to me about the oil. I really wanna give my G-wagen the optimal oils and lube. Want to keep him for a while :)
I have already installed a engine heater from DEFA and a cupé heater.
Works really good in the winter, keeps the ice and snow away aswell.
I reach working temp justa after 5 minutes in the coldest winter.

Have a nice weekend all!
