Re: Roll Cage!

ok I am not terribly computer literate but I cannot seem to find Gavin's website as wot is referred to above. It does not seem to be listed under his details, plus his no of posts seems to be out of kilter as well
Any pointers?

Hit the Gallery button at the bottom of his post.

By the way it looks great Gavin. Are you taking it to Eastnor? Would love to see it in the metal so to speak.

Re: Roll Cage!

Gavin a couple of questions. How long did it take them to fit the roll cage, and what was the final cost, if thats not to rude. And was the rear bumper a one off as Ive not seen that on the ORC site. One thing I will say, looks good but for one thing, its tall but narrow, you need to widen the track and use 460 wheels for a better off set, as your sphinkter going to clench somewhat on tricky stuff. get some 12:50s. Are you pleased with P&P work.

Re: Roll Cage!

Being a G300 TD - what I want to know is how much/hard was it to fit the snorkle? Can you take a pic on how it is hooked up? I understand a lot of mods are needed to make it work on (y)our model.

Re: Roll Cage!

mmmmmm very nice, given I have loads LR specalists within 10 miles of here it seems like every third defender is lifted, snorkeled, winched etc.. however none looks as good as this. It would definitly attract envious glances on the green lanes (mine included) in the local area...

Re: Gavin's G

well the cage was £450 +vat and the fitting was £350 +vat, due to having to take out dash.

Re: Gavin's G

Max,
just think about it GTD`S dont like water, they have an air intake behind the head lamp! Trust me! This Could prove to be a very expensive engine repair. This is one of the reasons why they never produced a lot of the GTD`s. They dont swim very well! If you want to go swimming take advice from a friend a 461 with a snorkle! Not a 463 TD.

Re: Gavin's G

David, it has a snorkel fitted, the intake you are talking about has been blanked off. all done by ORC I believe. If you look at the picture you can see on the offside wing, the "DUMMY" air intake grill. however the snorkel has been fitted before that grill.

Gavin's is a 1999 G300 TD so the same engine. Thus I want to find out about the snorkle as after you and Mark I am well aware of this failing!

Re: Gavin's G

Hi max
Thats a ORC ONE! Check out btheir brochure part refs depending on model;
0490020710 463 RECHTS 320RS AND 300DT
0490020711 463 LINKS 320RS AND 300DT
0490020712 461 RECHTS 290 TD
0490020720 463 RECHTS+LINKS G500 AND 320V6
They do another verson which i had fitted to my stright 6 GD
0490020700 463 links for G320 and 300D(T)
0490020701 460-461 RECHTS AND G290TD
The only differance externally is the actual intake is higher on the latter 2
rather than lower and more swept on the other 4.
Gavins is one of the latter 2 more than likely the 0490020700

Re: Gavin's G

Hi All,
do the tubes from the light bar go to the chassis and act as a roll cage or are they just bolted through the bulk head and roof?

PP, the air vent in front of the snorkel houses an engine oil cooler complete with electric fan which is why it can't be used for air.

Re: Gavin's G

i wouldnt rely on it as a roll cage, its just a tree rubber really, to act as a roll bar it needs to attach to chassis, any how when g's do roll its the front corner of the roof, bonnet and wings that take the brunt of it. if god forbid Gavin was to roll it then the bar may take the brunt of the front corner of the roof, which inturn does come down onto the doors and A pillers.

Re: Gavin's G

Hello Gents,
Sorry for not answering your posts, but yet again I am away overseas...
Maxwell-Sorry, due to my job it's difficult to get to the events, so I'm sorry I wont be at Eastnor, nor will I be at the AGM either, but I dare say we'll meet up at somepoint. Regarding the snorkel, again sorry I can't send any photos just now, as I am a few thousand miles away from yourselves and my G. But I should be home around July, so if you remind me then, I shall take a few photos for you. There was quite abit of work involved, re-routing the inlet pipe and blanking off the standard inlet, but ORC took care of all that. The ORC part number on the invoice is 0490020714.

Peter-P&P had the vehicle for 3 weeks, but that was for my convenience too. Job could be done in a week including powder coating. The total cost was around £900 and I was thoroughly pleased with their work. There were a couple of hiccups, namely the lamp brackets were fitted behind instead of infront and the spreader bar below the windscreen was too high initially, they rectified all these and re-powdercoated without any additional charge.
Yes, I agree with you with regards to widening the track. Although I am quite happy with the 285x75x16" tyres, so I will just look at the offset.

Piggy/Peter-the rollcage for the want of a better word, is really fitted just to protect the leading edge of the roofline, windscreen & the mounting of the spot lamps. It is only bolted to the bulkhead & roof, but can be mounted to the chassis if required, although further work would be required. I was quite happy with the fact that there is enough support in the standard 'B' pillar, if I was unfortunate enough to roll it...however that sphincter muscle warning system would have cut in by then ! I hope that answers your questions.

Re: Gavin's G

Thanks Huseyin, Nice bloke...well I never, thanks mate !

Cheers Peter, but no chance ! She'll not be for sale for quite a few years, if at all !
I forgot to say about the rear bumper; the end tubes, steel pressings and light lenses were acquired from ORC, to make it look similar to the front one. The bumper I designed myself and had fabricated up by Overland Components, Nr Northwich (01565-777677), that is how Dan saw the vehicle before it was finished, as Overland Components are at the end of the road. So although I used ORC parts, it's basically a custom job.

Cheers Gents
