Gauges and indicators stopped working

All was working well, and then I noticed that the indicators had stopped functioning and so had the fuel and temp gauges and the tacho. Hitting the top of the instrument binnacle brought the gauges back to life, but they stopped again as soon as the indicator switch was turned on. After repeating the process a few times, hitting the cluster now no longer brings the gauges back on. The indicators haven't worked since I first noticed the problem but the hazard lights work OK; the charge and oil warning lights come on with the ignition but the brake warning light doesn't; instrument illumination works OK.

I suspect a faulty earth connection behind the dash somewhere. Does this sound plausible and, if so, whereabouts if the relevant earth point?

More likely a fuse, it will be one of either, loose or blown.

I do not have the numbers to the fuse, just check them out.

If a blown fuse is not obvious, with the tip of your forefinger, rock the fuse left and right so to rotate the fuse in its holder, hopefully making a bad connection, good.

The fuse is under the steering wheel, at the bottom of the panel there will be a thin strip of cover screwed on with two quick release screws, one, either end of the cover.

Remove the cover, and the fuses will be under. The fuse you are aim ing for, is some where right off centreline of the lenght of the fuse rail. This is a rough guess now. I could be wrong.

Well done, Rakesh. It as a loose fuse. All is now working properly.

Re: Gauges and indicators stopped working

I had this same problem a while back, read this forum and solved it, (blown fuse, lost all my guages and the indicators!) so thanks to Rakesh for that.. :)

but now it is back and it is intermittant. the funny thing is that the engine runs much smoother, starts better and is generally much happier. is there anything else that is likely to cause all these problems? and why would the engine run better without the guages working? is this an earth problem as well as a loose fuse?

any comments welcome :)

Loose fuse holder and/or oxidise on the ends of the fuse .. take them all out.. rub by hand to make sure they are bright .. you can scrape/sand the fuse to clean it up but then they may not last as well ... then ensure it is held tight .. rotate and/or push fuse while looking at the instruments .. if they come on then it needs the clean. Mine also need pushed closer as the fuses are loose.. comes of someone being too rough while removing fuses.

Good old glass cartridge fuses are what we need!!
