Hi.
I've been having, ahem, issues with my oil pressure sender, oil cooler hoses, and oil cooler. Whilst having a poke around it appears that the nearside (left in uk!!) inner wing may unbolt as well as the wing itself. If it did, thi swould give me the access to the filter housing/pipes etc without having to re-remove the engine and 'box........
This would also allow me to have a small patch welded into the inner wing under the battery tray area without getting shafted by a mobile welder
Thanks people........

Re: Wings & Inner Wings.........

It may be easier, i struggled a little bit doin the oil sender and oil pump housing, but i had the luxury of a ramp.
On the issue of the inner wing, it does unbolt.

Re: Wings & Inner Wings.........

460 diesel has the vacuum tank under the left wing .. and I bet the bolts are seized

Getting the inner wings off is not too bad .. but if rusty I broke one stud onto the body shell and ended up cutting the chassis mount bolt at the the front .. plus rebuilt the vacuum tank protection and one of the studs into the plastic tank. Also note the dealer sells parts for wings; headlight bowl, inner wing front pillar and the double skin part at the rear.

Currently no inner and outer wings (or interior/windscreen, doors, bonnet..)

Re: Wings & Inner Wings.........

There is the rear windscreen washer pipe that goes through at that point .. you can feel it inside behind the speaker mount but more likely the issue is that the seam under the lip the inner wing mounts to has corrosion issues... have a look from inside; mine had streaks of rust here but as the windscreen bottom was shot maybe it was just from the drain holes that direct water flow down here! ... I dug out all the seam sealant here, welded up the little bit of hole and once all back together I hope to OK.

Re: Wings & Inner Wings.........

Those are hard plastic spacers on a 1989 model.

The studs pass through a double skin and you can feel the stud head from inside the A pillar/front wing section from through the hole behind the speaker.

Mine has some internal rusting between the skins but not too bad. The plastic spacer has no sealing function and if it leaked here it would pass down into the A pillar and drain out of the sills. I had streaks here and they were from the hollow section that forms the base of the windscreen- when this perforates under the rubber it has a couple of holes to pass the water down .. into this area... but hey your rust maybe different!

Re: Wings & Inner Wings.........

Progress report - new oil cooler hose fitted is 1.5" shorter than the one i had made up, now the oil cooler fits okay....., and oil pressure gauge fittings all installed ready for the wiring etc.

For the gauge, I've fitted a screw in T piece about an inch long in place of the sender unit, this has 3 M8 ports on it (comes with two blanking plugs and a back to back connector). This is then connected to an 182 braided hose, on the other end of which is a 3 port connector, one to take the braided hose, one is an M14 thread to take a new oil pressure switch (albeit not an MB one, an aftermarket "early warning 25psi one)), and the last port an m8 to take the switch that feeds the gauge, this means that I will have both the original dash light and an electric PSI gauge, mounted in a nice neat pod, final location to be decided......

All for around £60, and a load of hassle, but I reckon its an investment.......
