Hi guys,i intend on updating (renewing)the spark leads, rotor arm and distributor cap as i notice that my G cuts out a bit on acceleration from standstill and low revs when running on lpg.
i have already brought a set of ngk iridiums and plan on changing all electrical leads to the engine. Now my question is,is there any other place to buy these leads accept eurocar parts.is there a better quality lead giving advantages to engine efficiency?

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

Beru from Eurocarparts are petty much OEM quality at discount price. German and Swedish might be cheaper but stick with the Beru/Bosch brands

Word of warning get yourself a pair of spark plug pliers http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=16989&MAN=Draper-Spark-Plug-Boo... to remove the plug caps if you pull them off by had you will probably pull the wires out and destroy them.

I dont know if the 280 110 engine is happy with fancy plugs but I use standard Beru/ngk, but the later 300e engines are not meant to like anything other than the standard plug (or so I was told by an old time MB engine mechanic)

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

thanks for the tip earnest,i will get a set of those.

as for the ngk iridiums, shakir has them on his 280GEL which also runs on lpg and believe me shak's G is livelier than mine! i think the sparks work better with lpg,but i also reckon they are more efficient petrol aswell.

lpg will always exgaggerate any fault in your electrical parts, do this process but I never managed to get my 280 100% on gas.

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

hi peter,i have a recent problem with lpg.petrol runs a dream but lpg sometimes locks out (cuts out on gas )when switching over to gas and this goes on for a day or two.very fustrating indeed.it also tends to judder(stutter, cut in and out until about 2500 revs.this seems to happen more in the low revs almost as if its drawing in air.

i took it to an lpg center in woodford but they didnt even check it for the fault.all they did was a diagnostic and said it was running too rich on gas!
i am going back to them about this next week.

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

Huss,

What sort of temp. is it switching over at?
If the ambient air temperature is low and it’s switching over before the engine is up to full working temperature it could well run roughly on gas. You can not enrich it on lpg to help cold running as per petrol.

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

russ, when the switch is in auto position it starts on petrol and swich's over to gas after about 10 seconds at which time it stalls, unless i throttle the revs.sometimes it doesn't stall and sometimes it "dies" even at full throttle.and thats what happens when i switch from petrol to gas at high speeds(it dies out and starts slowling down until i switch back to petrol and it picks up again

thanks for interest in my problem.

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

What type of conversion is it? Single or multi point injection.

Sounds very much like it is switching over too soon. The regulator (round device maybe 150mm in dia. ) needs to be warmed by the engine coolant. The slowing down suggests the regulator is freezing.
Try switching over manually when the engine coolant is say around 40 deg. Celsius. Suggest you do this whilst on a light or closed throttle.

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

its a bedini model and feeds through the inlet and that pipe going into the inlet from the main unit was loose so i siliconed it up,but maybe its not air tight still.

i always switch over manually once she is warm but it still cuts off and dies until i switch back to petrol sometimes.

do you think its an air or eletrical fault?can the switch inside be adjusted to change over later or is it faulty?

Re: SPARK LEADS ETC.

Hus,
Without knowing your system it’s pretty difficult to figure what is wrong. From my knowledge this type should not switch immediately to gas when on auto. It should be set to switch over when the coolant reaches around 40 Celsius and the throttle closed. The fact that it does not do this seems to suggest either a fault or incorrect installation.
I know of a very knowledgeable guy who has fixed other peoples bodges but he’s based in Chester, not much use to you I guess. Problem being there re so many so called experts who have jumped on the lpg bandwagon, you just need to find someone from personal recommendation. Having said that yours sounds like a basic open loop single point system so it should be pretty easy to set up.

Good news Hus. Always start with the basics. LPG must have perfect electrics.
