starter motor leeps whizzing!!
i had this problem once about a month ago and was advised the starter motor was nackered.so i had it changed about 10 days ago,all seemed ok until monday night!
hit the starter and it happened again!turned off the ignition but the whizzing carried on.i then turned on the ignition, red light came on but no life when turning to start.anyway it stopped after a while and then started up ok,until last night!!
i randg the bloke who fitted it,he came this morning and put the battery lead back on and the whizzing carried on where it left off!
he now says the starter is faulty and will remove it on monday morning and take is to the spares shop he got it from.lets see what happens.
1-DID HE REALLY CHANGE IT?
2-WHATS THE CAUSE OF IT ?
3-IF IT WAS CHANGED,IS THERE ANOTHER FAULT??
RGDS-HUSSEIN
sounds like the solenoid
mine done the same and a new solenoid cured it
Hi Huss the starter has a solenoid attached to the outer case... the action of starting is that the solenoid pulls the bendix (geared drive) into the teeth on the flywheel..as the drive reaches it full travel contacts are made inside the starter to energise the motor. the whiiring sound you have is either the solenoid travel is not set up right or you have teeth missing of the bendix or the flywheel.if it is the flywheel.. because the engine may not stop with the damaged teeth in the same position every time sometimes it will engage and sometimes it won't.when the starter is removed you can see some of the flywheel teeth with a screwedriver you can lever the flywheel round and inspect all the teeth ..but slowly.rgds
reading through you description of what happens it would appear that the wire that energizes the solenoid when you turn the key is making the circuit before you turn the key............when you turn the ignition key on and before you turn it to the "start" position.. this can be caused by a faulty ignition switch or faulty wiring....if the starter turns before the solenoid moves the gear into the flywheel it will clatter but not engage..................please connect the battery with the ignition "off" and then turn the ignition "on" and tell Me what happens
was the whizzing with the ignition switched on or off
if the starter motor is turning when the ignition is switched on without turning the key to the start position its either a faulty ignition switch or a fault in the insulation or wiring connections of the starter solenoid or a jammed solenoid
faulty solenoid on the starter motor would be most likely..so the starter has to come off and go back to the repairer.... check the battery for low charge after all the failed starts
starter will require bench test to determine the fault/s ...the solenoid is a separate item bolted to the starter case...the motor contacts are internal and require the starter to be disassembled completely...last one we had done was GBP 120 parts and labour.... Bosch is not cheap....
hi chris, is the solenoid on the starter motor or is that a seperate part??
sorry for the dumb question mate!
