Turkish Delight!!!
hey guys, below are some pix of the sump as promised:
Sump modification.
Steering damper and bracket modification(made in 5 minutes!!)
Shortened front propshaft.
that sumps must be the only one of its kind
why did you have to make the sump mod ?
jesus was shocked when he heard of this conversion but has not commented yet
Think it is because he is a purist :D

Noooo! I hadn't comment becuase I was still in state of shock!
Honestly, it is fine as long as you don't use your G is such inclines that the oild pumps get starved of oil!
Very steep inclines
What could/would happen??
The oil pump woild stop pumping oil to the top end of the engine, resulting, if engine not immediately stopped in serious damage -could be fatal.
ok, can i overcome this jesus?
Yes, but it will be expensive, unless you can source the parts second hand. You need the oil pan and the oil pump from the 290GD (I understand that your engine is a OM602 5-cyl, isn't it?)
Well that's a OM603 (6-cylinder). Unfortunately only fitted, as far as Gs is concerned, to W463s and we know how difficult is for one of these to retire (aka be broken for spares).
If you want to optimize the performance and reliability:
Every 5,000 miles, tops:
*Change engine oil and filter (I use a good quality mineral W15-40 oil)
*Check all fluids (gearbox, transfer box and differentials) and change if necessary
*Check fuel filter and prefilter and change if necessary
*Grease all propshafts
*Check grease in front hubs, refill if necessary, investigate cause for loss
*Check air filter and change if necessary. I use K&N in winter and OEM (Mahle or Mann) in summer due to all that dust in suspension, specially when off-roading
*Check cooling fluid for level and antifreeze protection (temperatures where I live range from -15º to +45º). Change every two years.
*Check braking fluid for level, refill if necessary, investigate cause for loss. Replace every two years with DOT4
*Check clutch operation fluid for level, refill if necessary, investigate cause for loss. Replace when density/colour do not appear normal with DOT4
*Check diff lockers operation fluid for level, refill if necessary, investigate cause for loss. Replace when density/colour do not appear normal with DOT4
(not sure if I missed something)
I prefer not to use the K&N filter in summer due to the very fine dust that's everywhere.
I bought the K&N from http://www.ybfilters.co.uk
Ref is 33-2642 and I paid 45 GBP all included
Cheers
is your engine the same as mine ?
i could not find a match.canyou post me a pic of your egine please.
rgds
i thought that the k&n would filter out fine particles better???am i wrong ?
Yes, engines seem to be the same. But OM603 as I said was only factory fitted to W463, that is why I said that finding an original oil pan will be difficult, becuase no 463s are ever broken for spares!
K&N is a free-flow filter. No matter waht the manufatures says: the more air it lets flow, the less particles it retains. That's why I still rely on the OEM for though working conditins.
Huss, have you noticed that your engine has been fitted "standing up" while mine is leaning to the right (if you look at it wile seating inside the car). That's why your filter box interferes with the left shock mount.
I will probably fit a snorkel but not right now.
Cheers
If you compare these two pictures, you will see that your engine seems to sit lower in the engine bay and be leaning to the left less than mine. Look how high each reaches its respective heater box (mine seems to reach lower and more towards the battery).
Notice also that although mine was taken at a much higher angle, you barely see the exhaust manifold at all

woops!
