Right. Engine & box hopefully coming out in the next hour, just got one propshaft bolt & one engine mount to release and its crane time. Whilst I've been busy ive noticed the o/side front chassis leg is rusting at the kick-up into the engine bay, quite a large patch (pics to follow later today). It would seem stupid to put the new mechanicals in without sorting this first, a PITA as it will delay reinstallation, but i'm prepared to be patient.
It seems solid enough, but i figured quite unusual, the evidence seems to point to excessive heat build up (probably when the engine was cooked) as the osr mudflap is also shredded/melted close to the tailpipe.
I intend to get a grinder wire brush this morning, but what chemicals/paints would people recommend?

Appreciate urgent replies with thanks - the factors are closed for Xmas imminently....bloody Xmas :(

I'd go with the grinder wire brush down to bare shiny metal. if it's close to the exhaust, then engine enamel or VHT exhaust paint. If not, holts rustmaster followed with hycote underseal and finally waxoyl black.

i have seen this area rust on a few gs, all 280 petrols....maybe on these the exhaust is closer to the chassis leg, or it just runs hotter! i reckon if you clean that area back to bare metal it will be wafer thin (cue rounds of ..but monsieur it is only a waffer thin mint in crap french accent!). if you have welding facilities it would be quicker to cut out the skanky bit and weld in a bit of clean 3mm to replace.

I'd get it down to bare and shiny metal and see what is left. Maybe weld over new formed metal if required. The in this area definately VHT exhaust paint. Everywhere else waxoyl, including inside the chassis rail. That hole will be handy for the probe to go through and spray inside the rail. (see brown colour inside... ) Definately needs urgent and immediate attention tp prevent further decay and stop this car cancer from spreading.
