Well,
anyone know how it was done, or how little of the 617 was left UNMODIFED

In 1976, Mercedes-Benz decided to disprove the old prejudice ? and what could have been better suited to providing counter-evidence than a C 111 with diesel engine? The engineers installed a three-liter naturally-aspirated compression-ignition engine with five cylinders in the C 111-II for the first tests. In the car, now called C 111-IID, the OM 617 LA engine developed as much as 190 hp, thanks to turbocharging and intercooling, as opposed to the 80 hp output of the production engine which powered the Mercedes-Benz 240 D 3.0 (W 115, Stroke Eight) and, at a later stage, other models. In June 1976, the C 111-IID reached spectacular speeds on the test track at Nardo near Lecce in Italy. In the course of 60 hours, four drivers established a total of 16 world records ? thirteen of these applying to diesel-engined cars and three to cars in general, irrespective of their type of engine. During the tests, an average speed of 252 km/h was recorded, and Mercedes-Benz proved impressively that diesels also have sprinter qualities.

Mercedes engineers? What a bunch of sissies!

Check the videos on this thread of the Finnish Mercedes Forum and see for yourself!

Is there a ferry to Helsinki?

Enjoy!

Some impressive stuff but 190 would do me rightly, for a wee while anyway.

Now then, forget not that the 190 was not achieved with "pump" diesel. The engine was operating on diesel principles but there were all kinds of exotic "elixirs" mixed in with the diesel. Also, the power never really kicked in until 4000rpm
Still, it was a most impressive feat of engineering at the time.
True to Mercedes custom at the time, the engines' max output was halved for reliability. And that is why it is quite OK to stick a turbo on a "normal" OM617. Might not exactly last one million miles, but even one-fifth of that is enough, isn't it? Though to increase boost and rpm, it is probably better to go for the 617a with its exotic internals/materials.
OR:Do it the modern way and just take a normal 617 and ceramic coat the combustion chambers, valves and pistons and run it on Mobil1 :D

Funny you should say that, I, due to your post re Mobile 1's wonderful properties was wondering how much one could tweak the old girl, WITHOUT touching the internals at all, if running on such "super oils", and accepting a reduced engine life, ( at max 3,000 miles per year )
But that ceramic coating sounds a bit hitech/expensive and surly one would uprate con rods etc at the same time ?
Daydreaming as usual,
Marcus
