That's it all done now - enjoy!
Many thanks to MCCOX for giving us such a detailed insight in such a rare G.

Re: 290gd pictures

Very rare GWagen indeed!

But I am somewhat disappointed at what I believe is lack of proper care of that G... that is not what I would call a "clean" car -specially the interior. Looks like some small animal died in the rear seat! And what about the rusted edge of the fuel filter! Curiously, that G is fitted with what appears to be a secondary pint-sized fuel filter in addition to the standard one and the pre-filter.

The steering damper seems to be the bigger A0004636632 rather than the normal one and the gearbox is an exchange unit ("Tauschaggregat"). But judgind by the picture, the G does not seem to be leading an easy life.

Re: 290gd pictures

Jesus, that second filter looks like a primary/water trap to me which could explain why the rim of the main one has gone rusty because it will last much much longer in this case.
As for the interior, I think "earning its keep" is a phrase that comes to mind.

Re: 290gd pictures

Come on guys, be nice. He went through all the trouble taking the pictures and posting the disc to me, surely not to have it slagged off. :(
It is obviously WORKING for a living, as it was meant and designed to do.

Re: 290gd pictures

No, Mercfan, don't get me wrong. I am obviously very thankful that the man bothered to take all these pictures for this forum's enlightment about his extremely rare G.

Twodogs, no, this G's engine has nothing to do with the Sprinter. This is the naturally aspirated precursor to the Sprinter's. It started life as the OM602D25 (as fitted to the W460 250 GD and W463 250 GD) and it was then bored to 2.9 litres and renamed OM602D29 and fitted to the W461 290 GD. The engine is therefore structuraly similar to the 6 cylinder engine fitted to early W463 (300GDs and 350GDs), but with one cylinder less.

The uniqueness of this truck is that it is RHD. There were a total of 12,131 290 GDs made (civilian and military) but this is the only civilian RHD that I know of -and I have seen few Gs. That is what bugs me. If I had such a unique G, I would give her the royal treatment at the weekends, even if during the week she would have to earn her keep.

Cheers

I'm sorry to take so long to answer this! I bought it via this website about two years ago, from the For Sale section.

My one is a white RHD G290 LWB. Manufactured in Germany 1996. Imported to England 1998. 461 Chassis. Its a non-turbo engine, with the five-speed transmission, two-speed transfer box and separate manual diff locks. It has all sorts of dust shrouds to protect the alternator and so on, plus the air filter is different to normal ones. Its on 16" steel wheels, and carries the spare on the rear door. I have two other spares, which came with it. Its got what I assume is an aftermarket roo bar on the front with two large spots (which I have just disconnected). I also have the original roof rack bars.

Inside, its got leather (not MB-Tex), air con and CD changer, but otherwise is rubber matted (which is just what I wanted). I also have the rear seats, but they aren't fitted at the moment. I have fitted an animal grille behind the rear seats, which I had made by Barjo Engineering. Bizarrely, it also has side steps.

I have (hopefully) attached a picture of it, taken on the drive of the chap I bought it from at the time. If anyone would like pics of any specific bits, let me know and I will see what I can do.

MC

Investigating a little further...

This G was made in early 1994 and not in 1996 as MC thought. Not strictly a civilian GWagen, since it was made for "humanitarian societies, export (496)".

It's datacard bears the codes:

Z11 export special version, for roads in bad condition
Z12 export special version ii (africa package)

So there you go, made to order for some ONG with the intention of being taken to Africa, it was probably never paid for and MB decided to sell it on in 1998 (four years later), when it ended in the UK.

Strangely, the datacard does not bear either code U46 (leather upholstery) or U40 (seat cover in single-coloured imitation leather (MB-TEX))

That's right, though on second thoughts I don't think that MB would produce just one unit of a RHD 290GD to order... it sounds more likely that they produced this unit to entice say the UN to buy a batch from them, an order which never materialize.

A few years ago, there were at least two military soft-top LWB two door 290 GDTs in RHD which were built as demos to try to gain military contracts. After a few years stored in germany, one was offered through the GWOA comittee, while the other was sold to a dealer in Scotland (I think).

Re: 290gd pictures

Good to see more photos of this vehicle. My G290gd is a fake but the owner of this vehicle was kind enough to send me photos a year or so back which helped in my conversion. Still a wee way to go before I am happy with mine but most of the work and research is fun. I assume this one has 3.72 diffs and wonder what ratio the transfer case is.

Re: 290gd pictures

Twodogs,
Parts should not be a problem surely, even my Steyr Puch comes up on the MB computer, when one asks it nicely/presses the right buttons, seemed to suprise the technician even, cos he was saying -- "nah mate that wont be on our system", but it was.

Re: 290gd pictures

Well actually Twodogs that was something that I had always taken for granted -- that Daimler Chrysler as now is -- would be able to supply parts for old/obsolete models, but yes different to most of the other marques.
PS
Probably 25 or 30 years ago my father went to the local International tractor dealer -- to order some wee bit for a B250 ( bought in 1957, and we still have, and it still works away ), dealer said " no need to order Max, we keep stocks for all models up to 30 years old, it's International policy"
How times have changed,
Marcus

Re: 290gd pictures

Thank you very much for posting this information . It shows that the final drive is in fact 4.9 which is the same as my 290GDt. However unless I read it wrong it has an automatic with an overdrive top gear. This would be the ideal solution to my problem and wonder if any of you guys out there has put a later model auto in your G wagons. It would involve even more electronics and must admit i have a tad too many in my G already!. Up until now I had assumed the Transfer case has a ratio of .8/1 but it is in fact 1/1. Again thank you . I will put up some photos of my G conversion . john

Re: 290gd pictures

The ratios above are for the 5sp manual supplied with the 290GD, final drive 4.9
The 290GD turbo came with 4sp auto, final drive 3.72

This is correct. I attach technical data for the 290 GD Turbodiesel LWBSW
