Manual Haynes 3253 Mercedes-Benz 124 Series covers your engine (M103) as well as the manual (717.4) and automatic (722.3) gearboxes fitted to early W463 GWagens.

As for the Russek manual, if it is as I suspect a translation into English of the Bucheli Verlag manual, it won't be that useful for your 463 GWagen, because it does not cover the M103 engine or any automatic gearbox. It is unfortunately a very poor manual, too concentrated on the early diesel engines. In any event, I would like to hear an independent comment on the Russek manual....
the w124 saloon petrol engine had basically the same model M103 series engine. I think the the model ident numbers are different which means things like the webbed sump will not be fitted...I have the Mercedes "pre microfilm" service manual for 200ge. 230ge. 300ge. 250gd. and 300gd. series 463. all models. from MB Stuttgart issued in May 1990 In English. amounting to 324 pages.. my local photocopy specialist will copy and bind at a cost of 10 pence per page. plus parcel postage a copy would probably cost around GBP 40. plus my aggro' l ets say GBP 50 a copy....
Like some have said above, the haynes is not a bad option.
Just don't waste your money on the russek manual. Personally have found it to lead me astray in the early days when I started with G's...
I have a decent copy of the Haynes manual if you want it.3253. Don't buy a new one
It is hardly a recommendation to say that I didn't find it particularly useful, but then I have other more specific G manuals.
I certainly covers basic engine maintenance and stuff. No grease marks on it
I have used the Haynes one I had for my 190E 2.6 which is the same engine basically aswell (type 103). The G Wagen Oil Filter Housing requires a special tool though to open which is the only thing to pay attention to (Typical Mercedes wanting to hog all the service work) You can use one of those chain type oil filter wrenches with a thick cloth round the housing to get it loose and tighten up again.
Can I use the same Haynes for my 1987 280 G LWB auto straight 6 petrol Gary
No you have the same engine as both of mine, M110 twincam, the engine mentioned earlier is a single cam M103 which usually comes in 3 litre form, or 2.6 in 190's and e class's, s class's, and later G wagens (463 i think)
A cd manual is imminent from GWOA, hold your breath, if you get really stuck, send me a PM
Haynes for my 1987 280 G LWB auto straight 6 petrol Gary
Use the one for the W123 280e - same engine:
I will wait for the CD Thanks again Gary
