fluid in drivers footwell?

I have read all the posts regarding water in teh drivers footwell, but is there any possibility of any other fluids leaking in ( brake or servo ) ?

Reason is the 'sponge' below the drivers floor carpet appears to be water logged which I think might be from when the previous owner power washed it but the over mat appears to have a 'blue/green' fluid soaked into it. This of course might be a spillage from the recent service?

Anyway before I start poking about is there anything obvious to check for?

Windscreen washer fluid? Think the tubing to the rear runs up inside the n/s A pillar? Could be wrong about this tho'.......

Hi or heater matrix ...keep an eye on radiator header tank for lowering levels and listen at floor level after you shut the engine down after a run for a hiss in the heater area...rgds

Take the mat out and dry it inside for a few days. Meanwhile observe the steel floor pan to see if any new water leaks in. Mine doesn't like parking in the rain on a slope with the nose up, it leaks, whereas opposite it doesn't
Common fault is a leaking windscreen wiper spindle
Nice G, I've seen the plate before

also clean the heater box in the engine bay, if the minge flange is blocked, the heater box fills with water and finds its way inside.

I'm going to remove the carpets & put down a rubber mat. Hopefully I should be able to tell what leak it is.

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

its been chucking it down today and I found the under dash panel by the bonnet release is wet and the inside of teh glove box is also wet. Looking at the wiper spindles, the passenger side looks to have no seal & can be moved around quite a bit .. the drivers side seems OK

Put plenty of Vasoline on your knuckels, that's the secret to changing the wiper spindels.

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

You replace the entire spindle not just a seal. Both L&R sides wouldbe prudent. Get them from MB dealer I can't remember the cost but it was reasonable.
You have to remove the glove box which is easy for the LHS, I can't remember how to get to the RHS but probably remove the steering wheel and pull out the dash. But you could try dropping the lower panel and see if that's enough.
The spindles just unbolt with the large nut on the external side. Obviously remove the wiper arm first. As I recall it was fiddly. Swear at your leasure type of job

One of those jobs which develop as you go along. Give yourself plenty of time, work methodically towards your goal(spindles) and most importantly have someone on standby to keep the cups of tea coming...

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

Sorry mate, I have been a tad too cruel with that joke.

The good thing about GWagen DIY is that it's so frustrating sometimes that when you sucessfully finish the job you feel really proud of yourself -and really knowledgeable and experienced about the whole thing- given that you have done it 13 times before sucessfully completing it!

Good luck with the job

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

in case anyone is interested & following the saga of my wet carpets here is the update :)

It has been chucking it down most of today so thought I'd have another look under the dash to check there was not another source of fluid in addition to my recently discovered leaking heater valve. Anyway there on my recently placed rubber mat was a pool of water around the throttle pedal  . Water was dripping down from above the bonnet release handle. Had a good look using a torch & could see water was dripping down from the windscreens lower corner. Had a look at the windscreen & it doesn't have the sekurit logo so I am assuming it is a replacement screen & the seal isn't doing its job?

Interestingly the passenger side wiper spindle is VERY loose / rusty & is deffinatly leaking. The drivers side is nice & tight & looks a lot newer. I can tell the dash has been disturbed in teh past so I am guessing the drivers spindle has been replaced. I imagine the previous owner was very dispaointed when water still leak in

Anyway, leaks so far are:

Leak number 1 .... coolant leaking in from heater control valve located under the central dash. Replace valve unit

Leak number 2 ...... water leaking from windscreen seal . Use clear silicone & reseal teh rubber?

Any comments or advice?

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

there are specialist brands of windscreen sealer that stay flexible for a long period... they move about with the flexing of the glass and the body. best source is the regular windscreen installers...before applying sealer take a cotton cloth and with a flat blade lift the external rubber seal outer edge all the way round the windscreen and clean the years of mud and dirt out so that the seal sits flat on the metal surround then run a track of sealer under the rubber all the way round.along the flat edge that the wipers sit above again remove all the crud and smear a heavy coating of petroleum jelly /vaseline along that edge against the glass and into the corners lifting the seal away from the windsceen as you do this...the sides and upper part should also be treated the same way ** if there are any rust bulges under the rubber it will be difficult to get a proper seal without taking the windscreen out and treating the corroded areas......

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

I still have not had time to sort this problem

BUT I did check the sunroof drain today. Poured about 1 Lt of water down the drivers side drain. Thankfully no water dripped out into the foot well :)

All the water drained onto the driveway out of a drain hole in the sill just below the B-pillar area.

At least I have now eliminated the sunroof drains being blocked :)

Re: fluid in drivers footwell?

So that's where the drain goes! Must take a closer look then...and I still suspect the windscreen seal..
