Re: engine choice

Hi starting at lowest cc petrol the 230 ge at 25mpg gives poor perfomance due to the vehicle weight the 280ge at 18 mpg livens things up.add LPG and whilst you get less mpg on the gas the overall cost of a 400mile trip reduces.
the 300gd has a poor power to weight ratio.sluggish and no top end performance.. with the correct turbo installation the allover performance increases by 40%
fuel consumption on the 300d is around 26mpg. with turbo 22mpg. these are general use consumption figures... you can do better with a lighter right foot. the 463 model petrol will average 18mpg with vastly better performance and the diesel 25mpg. the automatics burn slightly more fuel than the manuals ..again it depends on the right foot...these figures are my findings only ..MPG being the most "talked about" subject for any vehicle rgds

Re: engine choice

I have been searchin again to look of the possibilities of a 602 engine out of a sprinter and 603 etc into a 460, but it always swings back to a 617a for simplcity of the change. carn't we as a group to find an agent in the states to locate and purchase a few of these units?

Re: engine choice

Now there is an absolute brilliant idea!
Thought ages ago it must be worth filling a container with them and shipping them over... Want to see the scramble when the container gets opened up here though...
Has anyone here got contacts in the USA who can be trusted and who have the experience/skill/equipment to at least do compression checks before buying?
Otherwise it'll mean some of us going over there for a few weeks, renting a truck and doing it ourselves...could be interesting

How many engines were you thinking of?
I have a few contacts on 'the continent' and could enquire if you like?

Re: engine choice

Trouble with the continent is that they are quite sought after there as well. Been quoted £1500 not that long ago...

Re: engine choice

Quantity depends on price at the end of the day I suppose...
What price can your contacts do? Collection on the continent not too much of a problem - there's a few of us on here with vans & trucks.

Have you got kit? I'm seriously up for it. Lets see what Richard's contacts can come up with and then we'll make a decision. There are quite a few other goodies over in the USA which we can help ourselves to while we are at it...

Re: engine choice

I travel to the states regularly.

Just back and booked again for December.

I located a Mercedes Graveyard of old Merc Diesels last time I was in Daytona, but as it was a Sunday, just nosied around. Most were S class diesels in various states.

Not sure if this was a starter... had thought of importing them myself if they were in good nick, but would prefer to spend other peoples money!!

Just thinking out loud....

Re: engine choice

Martin, the S-classes you saw - were they w126's? In which case a no-go, as they had the OM603 3L and infamous 3.5. But if they were a Merc graveyard, they must have 617a's - have you got any contact details?

Re: engine choice

From 80-85 the W126 also had the 617a fitted, mine came out of such a car?
you are looking at around £1000 for a 617a (unwarranted!)

No contact details, as I said it was a sunday and to be honest, whilst I enjoyed the sight... I don't know what to look for in model designation that far back. I do recall a few saying 350 turbo diesel.

Best that I pop out there on my next trip (Xmas). Wife wont be very happy... think her whole trip is planned around Walmart!!

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers
