280's with manual?
excuse my ignorance, but were all 280's automatic?
I'm really not a fan of automatics, but the 280 seems to be the 'engine' to go for in a 460.
There are some manuals around but the auto is a stronger box. I've got both and would always go for the auto but I understand some people don't like auto's.
Go for the 280 Auto. Merc autos are quite a league of their own and the box in the 280 even more so. Best "standard" combination in a W460 G for off-roading.

I have to agree, and the manul gearbox in a G was never ergonomically frirendly.
Even challenge secne LR's are going auto. :wink:

Indeed, "waking up to smell the coffee" is a phrase that comes to mind.
Sadly though the LR auto is a piece of junk compared to the technical marvel that is the 280 auto gearbox
i was about to make a comment about the ergo of a manual, i am a long chap and it was still a reach for that manual stick, and after a lot of town driving the shoulder started hurting! if its for your wife go for the auto. also think of modern mercs, mercedes cannot make a good manaul box!
My auto was great, i wish my Vito van was Auto.
Mines 280 Auto and is great ,love it.
Just got in from visiting family in london.Filled her up for £25 (45.9p ltr)!!!!
Great auto,such a joy to drive and takes the stress out of constant leaning to change gear.
